Medium Mass Driver Cannon
A heavily armored slow firing weapon that delivers an explosive warhead deadly to armor, but only moderately affecting shields. Mass Drivers were considered an out-dated weapon when lasers were developed which easily melted away layers of armor. Over the years, ships began to sacrifice armor while focusing on stronger shields to prevent laser damage, a choice that allowed Mass Drivers to still cause destructive reign on unprotected hulls. A well timed salvo of mass driver could easily cleave a ship in two when the target's shields were broken down.
So the Medium Mass Driver (MMD) is a slower firing weapon. It does less damage to shields than a turbolaser blast, but against armor, it is more deadly than a heavy turbolaser. The MMD is similar to a railgun, where it fires a high velocity explosive round at its target, which explodes upon impact causing minor area damage.
Hmm.. If it's like a rail gun shouldn't it fire a solid slug of hard metal like a tungsten / depleted uranium alloy? I mean explosives don't do much damage to metal armor anyways but a solid round fired at a high velocity probably would, that's how sabots work as far as i'm aware.
So mass drivers dont go through shields in this mod? Or will it be some sort of mitigation where shields take part of the hit and part goes through?
Heavy mass drivers will bypass shields, such as the weapons of the Mando Vengeance Figate. Light mass drivers, and medium mass drivers will be stopped by shields. The MMD fires an explosive warhead that causes area damage.
Why would heavy mass drivers bypass shielding and the mediums dont? Makes me think mediums wouldnt be that bad against shielding after all :P
YESSS! I hope there is some sort of ship that primarily focuses on slug throwing weapons, like some ancient old cruisers retrofitted with minimal shields and better engines :3

The last line makes me think of the scene in Nemesis where one of the valdores had its port wing and nacelle torn off. Definitely looking forward to seeing these bad boys firing.
