Endurance-Class Fleet Carrier image - Yuuzhan Vong at War mod for Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption
Behold the Yuuzhan Vong Army! This mod adds the Yuuzhan Vong Race as a playable faction and all units of this era. We are a community of modders working for the greater goal, so anyone who wants to help or support us is welcome!
This model was inspired by the artwork produced by FractalSponge, and using the models of EvilleJedi. Additional model parts were created by Kharcov and assembly and details by Burntstrobe. Turrets by Geroenimo and Kharcov.
The Endurance-Class Fleet Carrier
One of the most disputed ships of all of SW EU concept artwork.
The Endurance was created after determining that the Nebula performed much better in a role as an assault battleship instead of an assault carrier. Removal of the massive ion cannons of the Nebula, and the ventral hull fins with missile launch silos left a slimmer keel to the ship. The removal of the Nebula's large ventral hanger in place of a smaller forward ventral hanger allowed for a slimmer ventral profile while also permitting the addition of reinforced hull plating armor.
The forward gun mounts of the Nebula were also removed, leaving the Endurance with a blunt front end. Additional changes to the ship called for hollowing out a large portion of the central dorsal area of the ship to allow for a massive hanger and assembly area, where large numbers of fighter squadrons could quickly be prepared for launch or moved around within the enclosed protection of the ship for repairs. With the hollowing out of the center of the ship, a large portion of command control decks were moved to a flying bridge which was supported above the main body of the ship. The main Shield Generator of the ship was also positioned on this 'flying bridge' giving the command deck/conning tower extreme protection during battles.
3 hanger entrances were added to the main hanger hollow, 2 on each flank of the Endurance and one large launch ramp located towards the dorsal bow of the ship.
To aid in the coordination of all the hanger access ports, multiple curved control towers were added to key positions around the ship hull, giving the ship excellent flight coordination abilities (commander boost for fighters only).

The additional armor plating added to the hull proved so effective in combat against the vong, this led to the 3rd generation of the ship ship, the Rejvenator -Class Destroyer, a sleeker yet stronger amored battleship when compared to the Nebula.
The story of the Endurance is a tough one to explain. This my best attempt to explain the ship lineage while showing a progression of ship designs based upon modular ship construction. The Nebula was built first as all powerful warship, the Endurance second, as a protective safe haven for fighters, the Rejuvenator third as a heavily armored assault ship that would continue service during the Swarm War.
The Endurance has a passive repair ability for nearby fighters, and has a passive fleet commander bonus that applies to fighters only.

You can see the Prowler and Ferret emerging from the main launch ramp in picture 1, and the Millenium Falcon is docked in the side launch hanger in picture 2 if you look hard enough
Wow you weren't kidding when you'd said it would be combination of the Nebula and Rejuvenator. It looks very unique. I like it.
Though seeing the Endurance having similar armaments to the Rejuvenator, the Rejuvenator feels undergunned. (I know those ion cannons on the Rejuvenator will wreck a ship's shields but just the fact it was so little weaponry for a Star Destroyer feels weird.)
Rejuvenator is fast, has heavy lasers and does not have to worry about protecting fighter squadrons. It essentially has much stronger health due to the inside not being hollow and instead being much more reinforced. The Rejuvenator is a tough ship.
Well, the Nebula was designed to take on an Imperial class through the use of the most modern technologies. Try to remember that by the time the Nebula entered service, the Imperial class was over 20 years old, and it achieved its place as the gold standard through use of brute force. The design team was probably given the requirement "build a ship that can do what the Imperial can do, but in a smaller hull, at lower cost, and with more modern technology", with this being the result. Endurance seems that it would be better suited for launching scout craft to find targets for the Nebula. Rejuvenator seems like either a Tector style modification to the Nebula, which is to say forget the fighters, and such, this is a warship, not an airbase, or a simplified model, to help facilitate quicker production requirements, kinda like how the m3 grease gun was supposed to supplement the m1 Thompson back in ww2.

Also remember that the Rejuvenator entered service at the end of the Vong war, a time when governments were changing tactics and relying on smaller more mobile fleets of smaller warships. The age of the giant battleships had passed, and beginning was a period of specialized 'SWAT squads'. The Rejuvenater was faster than the Nebula, and it's role (as we envision it) was to rush ahead, cripple the enemy's strongest ships, and pull out to allow the frigates and cruisers to dish out the heavy damage during battles.
This should prove effective when the New Republic goes to war against the Chiss, who's mainline battleships are advanced Victory Star Destroyers.
Age of giant warships had passed? The age of giant warships never passes, this is star wars, even in the legacy era they've got SSDs ;)

The goal was not to recreate FractalSponge's ship, but to be inspired by it, and make it fit into the ships of our mod, the works of EvilleJedi, and adhere to the modular ship concept of the 5th Fleet.
I thank you again for your talents and efforts, EvilleJedi, FractalSponge, and the modeling talents of Kharcov, who made all the custom parts needed to create the Endurance.

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the Endurance suppose to be the same length as the Nebula instead of the Rejuvenator since the Endurance is supposed to be built/based on the same hull as the Nebula. In the picture it's the same length as the Rejuvenator.

I'm kinda mad that the YVW books pretty much omitted the Fifth Fleet, the NCMP ships in general, and even the K-wings. Hell, even Lusankya wasn't that active for the better part of the war. Was the Black Fleet series really that unloved?
the Black Fleet crisis was the main show of the 5th Fleet. The 5th was present during the Vong war, but a lot of it was damaged after the Yeveetha battles, but due to its success, the moderization program was applied to the entire New Republic Defense Fleet, which meant all fleets started to incorporate New-Class ships
there were serveral new class ships present at the battle of calamari, and the ranger gunships were first used during battle of helska iv. The nebula class star destroyer, despite how powerful it was, was phased out because the MC90 was an even more superior warship and the mon calamari had a good deal of them built also.
I am guessing it is to be implied that the new-class ships were still present, but the focus was more on the larger ships for the end of the war, such as the Mediators, the Viscount and the Stridents.
I honestly think that the authors just got a bit lazy... they did miss a huge opportunity to make the actual new style of ships act like character stars themselves. The Millenium Falcon, Nebulon B, MC80 Liberator and the Star Destroyer are as famous as Han Solo, Luke, Leia and Ackbar... but for some reason the authors missed seeing that the actual ships could be celebrities themselves...
... rest assured, we will not miss that opportunity here with the mod ;)

Somewhat irrelevant question...
When you created this new design and omitted to dorsal hangar did you imagine the side hangars as one large room running the width of the ship or two separate ones?
Just wondering because looking at Fractalsponge's I always imagined it was one massive room. When looking at this one the design seems to be two hangars separated by some pretty heavy armor although they are still on the same deck so I have no idea.
I love how a ship's internals are never adequately described so we all have to make stuff up. That's half the fun though isn't it?

Couldn't see the dorsal hangar at first, it kind of blended in with the rest of the ship.
4 hangers total:
1 on each side, the main flat area on the top is like a runway that goes into a square opening (in first pic you can see the Prowler and Ferret inside the opening, 1 small hanger for shuttle craft on the bottom.
I envisioned the entire top hanger to be 1 giant room, basically a giant armored repair bay.
Im thinking that the Hanger Facility is probably the size of a pair, maybe a trio of Carracks sitting abreast
So an idea just occurred to me. is it possible, and if so, practical, to have a menu screen that isn't the standard random space battle between GE/IR vs RA/NR forces like in Phoenix Rising, and if so, do you have any plans of what you might do?
because I think it would be totally sweet if the Menu Screen was similar to the Concourses in the X-wing Game Series, or the Hangers in the Rogue Squadron Series (when you select your ship), or in the Freespace games. I personally think that the Hanger of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer or Victory-class Star Destroyer would fit nicely, as it was used by the New Republic/Galactic Alliance, Imperial Remnant, and if we are willing to count the Technicality, the Chiss Ascendancy (the Victory variant you have made for the Chiss. although technically you could consider and Admonitor to have been Ad-hoc forces due to their association with the Empire of the Hand). And I feel that its possible the Hutts might have acquired one or two Victory-classes at some point. Maybe even an Imperial. And if it could be set so that the hanger would have faction-specific variants, each with their faction's fighters, banners, maybe even a Ship Logo like the Avenger's but modified (source: Img1.wikia.nocookie.net) for Chimaera, Blackguard for the Hutts (her final fate was unknown anyway) or maybe the Invidious (no mention of her final fate either), Admonitor for the Chiss (again, no mention of her final fate), and I guess Errant Venture for the NR/GA, given that she was probably one of the most famous of the ISD's in use by the NR/GA and its allies that were not part of the Remnant.
I realize this would fit better with a flight sim, but I still think it would be pretty cool.
