A rugged flying tank of a starfighter, the E-wing featured superior armor and firewpoer while matching the same speeds and shielding of the X-wing.
Designed for escort duty, the E-wings were ruggedly built to take a beating in the midst of battles, often flying in the thick of combat. Armed with 3 medium lasers, an upgraded version of the T65-Xwings's lasers and a single proton torpedo launcher, The E-Wing's job was to survive and fend off anything that came too close to capital ships.

The E-Wing has always reminded me of Battlestar Galactica's Vipers. Also a question, will these only be buildable with the 5th fleet?
I thought those lasers should be firing from the 3 laser cannons, 1 on top, 2 at sides outside the engines, instead of firing from somewhere near the cockpit?

think of them as giant Laser Aiming Modules like those used on firearms, but with rangefinders and other Target Acquisition equipment
Correct, the a-wing, e-wing and b-wing have targeting lasers that will periodically display so the fighter can gain better accuracy with weapons.

Okay, Younglings. When an X-Wing and an A-Wing love each other very much they make an E-Wing.
I always thought that the E-Wing had better shields than the X-Wing rather than armour. Most iterations I've seen of it seem to reinforce this idea.
It says on the wiki link I posted, down a bit right above "development" it had better armor than the x-wing
