Probably the most advanced frigate to emerge from the Redili Stardrive, the Assault Frigate MK2 is culmination of design principles incorporating the firepower of Imperial starship doctrine with the durability of Mon Calamari armor and shielding. Featuring 4 dual heavy turolaser turrets, 4 quad medium turbolaser turrets, proton missile launchers and strong shield generators, the AF MK2 has become the backbone of the Rendili Stardrive Defense Corps.

unfortunately, the Mk. 1 was more of a massive Retrofit of the Dreadnought, and not a new ship fresh from the Assembly line.
of course, you can always say that the Mk.1 was a retrofit, and the Mk.2 a production version. hell, you could even retcon the design from the Vanilla EAW as being a test-bed for some of the new technologies, but that Rendilli decided to stick with the old Dreadnought Hull and Keel because of their familiarity with the design.
or better yet, have a Mark 3 variant. one that combines the design of the Mark 1 with the powers and improvements of the Mark 2, but perhaps being less expensive than either, as now you're building the ship from scratch instead of having to dismantle and re-build the ship, and or a better reactor to handle the load better than the original Dreadnought's reactor
it happened with the A-wing In-Universe, iirc, with the Mk.1 being pretty much hand assembled, while the Mk.2 being built at an assembly line, as well as at least once in real life, with the MG1,2, and 3 Machine Guns
short version there is that the MG3 was a modified MG42. the MG1 was a copy of the MG42 but with some parts retrofits for a different bullet, built on the assembly line. the MG2 was the designation for war-time MG42's that were converted for the new bullet. and the MG3 was basically an MG1, but with improvements.
