Unreal is a highly enjoyable classic FPS with some rough edges. Unreal Evolution seeks to address these and bring a high quality golden age game to the next level. Expect tighter overall design. If you've played my critically-acclaimed 'GMDX' mod for Deus Ex, you know what to expect: Unreal Evolution is intended to enhance the overall experience yet retain the original spirit and concepts: Unreal but better.
Enhances Unreal Singleplayer and the Return to Na Pali Expansion Pack. Multiplayer is not Supported.
Now comes with support for the Return to Nali Expansion Pack too.
Experience the FPS classic Unreal at its absolute best. Game design you can trust.

UNREAL EVOLUTION INSTALLATION
=============================
1. Install Unreal Gold/Anthology, if not already present on your computer.
2. Install the official OldUnreal Patch 227i, if not already present. Copy the following link in your internet browser for this patch: Oldunreal.com
There are different versions of 227i depending on what version of Unreal you have, so be sure to download the correct one.
3. Confirm the game works as expected.
4. OPTIONAL: Install recommended graphics mods compatible with (and used in the design of) Unreal Evolution:
Unreal HD Textures: Moddb.com
Unreal HD Skins: Moddb.com
Check to see if they are working correctly.
5. Now for Unreal Evolution itself: Simply run the .exe installer download found on moddb.com and follow the steps.
Installation Complete
----------------------------------
A note on compatibility:
****Installation of UE will overwrite your Unreal.ini config file, as well as a number of .int English translation files found in Unreal/System. Backing up the system folder prior to installation is recommended if you'd like to return to vanilla.
Aside from this, UE is not destructive to other files in the Unreal directory. I will work towards a cleaner version in the future.

FAQ
===
Q: Is UE compatible with Multiplayer?
A: UE is compatible with the Unreal singleplayer campaign and Return to Nali Expansion Pack. This is the intended way to play. No multiplayer is supported.
You can also play other user-made map packs but only with UE's weapons, inventory and AI. All other features will be missing and this is not an ideal way to play, but it works well nonetheless.
-
Q: What versions of Unreal is UE compatible with?
A: UE is compatible with Unreal Gold, either from digital download (Steam, GOG) or Unreal Anthology version. It's not compatible with non-gold versions.
-
Q: Is UE available in [insert language]
A: UE is available in English only, for now at least.
-
Q: Which renderer should I use?
A: I've found the DX8 renderer to be the most reliable, but your milage may vary. Just don't use software renderer if using the optional texture mods recommended above, nor the newly released (as of Q1 2020) DX11 renderer, until it has been developed further. It doesn't play nice with Unreal Evolution in its current state.

Q: HELP! I have a crash/bug!
A: Please report all problems on UE's moddb forum or discord. Consider your problem may be related to the original game, not UE, and if so you should check PCGaming wiki.
Thanks for the release :D
Woah! That was fast! I thought it would take a year for the Na Pali update.
At least something good came from this lousy lockdown!^^ Cheers!
Can't instal patch 227i?? is there i need something else
Then you probably downloaded and tried to install the wrong version of the patch.
2020? seriously?
what do you mean by that?
I wasn't expecting that a 1998 game is still receiving new mods. I don't want to look disrespectful, I'm just surprised. I know that brutal doom and project brutality is still under development, but they are better known than unreal 1. even ut 3 is a bit unknow. Last week I saw the same for swat 4. And I love when this happens, cuz I like to try old unknown games that I never heard before and see that it has a still active community
Boi, so much fun! Return to Na Pali Evolution is better than the original add-on (and I liked Return to Na Pali a lot). On that point:
The new "Quad Shotgun" is groovy. I've just beheaded a Skaarj Lord with that thing.\o/
Glad you're having fun. Consider posting feedback on the discord. I want details!
thanks for the speedy release on this! I'm sure I will enjoy it as I enjoyed the mod for the original game.
Can u release a low res version? every time an explosion occurs or when a body get smashed, it says precaching for ~10 seconds. If I turn off precache then it lags for 10 seconds. I can't see other alternative, than uninstalling this mod. I promise I'll download it again when I get a decent PC
Change renderer. tweak renderer settings. Lower screen resolution. Most importantly, disable Unreal HD and Unreal Retexture Project mods (if you have them installed). Unreal Evolution itself has very little additional performance strain over the unmodded game.
And I have one more question. Does I have to download v1.1 too, to get unreal evolution in normal unreal campaign, or unreal evolution 2.2 covers RTNP and unreal?
Just v2.2
Hello Is there Unreal Evolution download for Classic patchs like 224, 225, 226? And I have another problem, How I can return my Unreal into original version to turn on Evolution, Is there Setting for Unreal evolution for Turning off and on? Thanks For Answers
The Bridge secret in Dug or dig? is broken. The top bridge gets destroyed but them bottom wont create a pit to get the access to the amplifier
I was wondering if it'd be possible for you to 'modernize' some of those vanilla special effects; namely the smoke trails and explosion effects caused by some weapons and enemy projectiles. They are just so awful even for such old game, sometimes it kind of kills my will to play.
Explosions and smoke do have minor improvements over vanilla, but indeed not much. Perhaps more should be done.

To be honest, I'm afraid that Return to Na Pali hasn't aged well at all, and despite all the changes made by UE it's almost as bad as I remember it from when I played it a lifetime ago. This expansion is just so boring and mediocre it feels as though it was made with the sole purpose of highlighting what a great game Unreal was on its own without any need for a mission pack. Still is actually, despite its age, but RtNP is the exact opposite of Unreal in almost every single sense, featuring a handful of awful new weapons, poorly designed levels some of which are much too large and barren, especially in outdoor areas; human mobs that felt quite out of place with all the other enemies, although as a small mercy they show up only once in the entire game; unnecessary cutscenes with bad voice-overs that somehow clashed with the previous sense of isolation of being stranded on a hostile alien world, and a soundtrack that feels like a big step back considering what a flawless job the composers did previously (as an example compare the beautiful, nostalgia-inducing credits music of Unreal with the downright annoying and ****** credits theme of RtNP). I can't say it's an overwhelmingly bad mission pack, though, at least not when compared with the abysmal quality of other expansions such as Blood II: The Nightmare Levels, but it's indeed beyond what anyone would've expected from the makers of Unreal.

Return to Na Pali was made with leftover assets mostly, including the maps that were cut from Unreal original campaign.
As it turns out, most of the maps were cut for good reasons, so I agree with your critique. It is more content, but the content there is (such as the new, uninspired "terran weapons") detract more from the game rather than enhance it.
Hello.
Pardon my ignorance, but will this work with the DirectX11 mod?

Thanks for reading.
I recommend Unreal Evolution mod for all fans, this is the best experience you can get from this game. It's amazing!
Been a while since the last update. Any plans for a new release?
This isn't even the basis for black mesa, that was a complete recreation. This takes the original game and makes it the way it should be.
Playing on Hardcore, no hud, I made my way down to the water at Nyleve's.
There was a pleasant surprise there, only on my way back up, round and back behind the house, the grunt got in my face, I made it - then a manta or small, carnivorous-flyer finishes me off.
This release is going to get attention.
I was with Black Mesa until the devs decided to take revenge on how unsatisfactory the Xen episode was and made it fifty times as big as the original was; very, very unnecessarily big. Things however took a much, much worse turn once you get to Gonarch's Lair and beyond. Boy, talk about padding.
Not sure what went wrong, but for some reason dodge button doesn't work for me, it still uses the old feign death mechanic. I have the mutator active, and the weapon behavior is new, so I'm pretty sure the mod is activated. What gives?
Nevermind, I'm actually a dummy, I defined the path incorrectly to Evolution's map files and such. After switching my classes back and forth it all appears to work on a new game, unfortunately it means I've lost quite a bit of progress, but oh well.
First thing you should notice is that the entrance to the execution room was changed, and that there are extra ammo pick ups - that's how you know that the maps are working correctly.
One thing I'd also like is making HUDScaling mod compatible with the new stamina bar.

There's this weird thing with saves - when it does not accept them if you had to reinstall the game+mod.
No way I'm replaying Sunspire slog again!
Had to start a new game, create random save, quit the game, delete that save, put my old save here and change the name to be the same as the deleted one.
Start the game, make a save ("Save2" for example), quit the game, remove it, put there your old one (made before uninstalling your game) and change its name to "Save2".
Otherwise it would not work.
No idea why it works that way...
