People remember that Dol Guldur was orginally named 'Amon Lanc' wich means 'Bald Hill'. There were almost no trees on that hill, and there is alot of trees arround it on the map. KingKong wanted Dol Guldur to be like this: Simple, but effective.
Quite correct. The hill has no trees on it. However, the area around the hill is said to be a thick forrest of dark trees(I believe it was pine with very dark green needles (almost black)). So on this map, the area around the base of the hill should be covered in dark pine trees. However, that Dol Guldur is very nice; not exactly what I think of but still very nice. Can't wait for the beta ;).
Also to, is the new mod out yet? i think not! all of this is still a work in progress. Besides these guys are already doing the impossible for this mod, i dont want to demand more than there already offering at this point :P
Well, you can't blame us for being influenced by John Howe's depictions of it, really: John-howe.com
The name of "bald hill" is prior to Sauron's arrival and, actually- there is no accurate description of it in ANY of the books.
The hill is bald. This is true. However, around the tree there was a dense forest of dark pines if I remember correctly from my reading. Now of course, how you depict it depends on what part you consider to be "the hill", where the tree line stops.
Hey it will be even nicer to have heroes on their own faction. like sauron has already been created. How about other hero standing alone like sauron. that will cool man. just an idea.
Please don't site John Howe as a reliable and lore accurate refrence. His illustrations are sooo far off the lore its rediculous (just look up his Dol Amroth and Minas Tirith concepts...)
there is a forrest around it look at the other pics. besides there has to be an area to deploy siege equipment as it cant move through woods. so i think a good 100 yards from the base of the hill theres an *** ton of trees
with or without trees I'm sure it'll be a specticle to behold, I'm looking forward to some good seiges on that. Nice pics.
shouldn't get too much lag with the trees put in the outskirts...if you do how the hell you play the vanilla Medieval 2 on the maps that have a bucketload of trees (there are a few)? Me suggests perhaps a pc or graphics card upgrade.
Looks all pretty good, but I miss a little bit the Dol Guldur look, sorry ...
Btw, I'm the first view, just to have this said, now I'll go and buy a cookie :D
that almost looks alot like the fortress of Amon Sul ...aka weathertop...either way, **** looks great!
Ha before I clicked on it I though it was amon sul! :P
look at those poor elves getting exhausted before they even fight lol
Needs Mirkwood around it.
yeah, isn't there supposed to be a forest around it?

Yes, quite correct. But that was back in the old days.
In the Third Age it is supposed to be surrounded by a thick dense forest.

Amazing as always ;)
@ WhiteWolf & Lauri - Read what has been written above by DuBaas007 about what Dol Guldur use to be called...
There is your reason why there is now trees...
Just read the books....

Why am I not surprised that I got a negative vote -_-.
are these coming in the new patch? if so...im flipping out right now!
Shouldn't there be a forest?

I doubt siege equipment would move on this kind of terrain, either...
I'm on the opinion of a thick tree ocean interrupted at the hill's very base line, yet leaving the hill clean of them.
I agree that there should be a thick forest, but other than that......simply breathtaking!!!!!!!!!
cmon guys whens the new patch gnna be out? we need those real cities instead of turdy medieval default ones! :D
the thing is,if you put all of those Black trees there, your damn PC's will lag and you can't see the fighting.

For those who plan on attacking Dol Guldur, good luck getting your troops up the hill without tiring them, even if you do walk.
