Hi urby. If you struggle with finishing the mod, you could publish a demo (e.g. one chapter) and see the feedback. This might inspire you to continue the development.

I've plenty of inspiration to work on it. The issue is my available time. Prepping a demo would be a waste of that limited time in my opinion.

Just don't give up. We all have time constraints as we're no longer school kids and you yourself are a father nowadays. Even my Mod Firestorm sits on my HD since 2008 with over 24 maps literally finished and ready to go but the mod itself as a whole isn't finished.

As long as people still release mods for HL1 and still love playing this timeless classic there's no rush to rush things. So take your time but please don't you ever abandon it Urby. You and Archie invested to much sweat into this stunning project of yours. The brilliant models, the model props, the maps and textures.

And the results of the poll also gave us a clear indication. There's still huge interest & demand for your mod. And these are just the initial numbers I'm sure in time this poll will rise to new highs regarding the expectations.

My advice create yourself a time table. To many humans planetwide begin their day without having any proper plan in mind on what to do that specific day. Or they like to sleep in despite the fact that they've rested long enough and are basically fit & ready to begin the day. Time management and a routine are essential to a fulfilled life and success. Remember life is short and most of us waste our few precious hours we have on this planet.

Is "The Core" wasted time? I'd say no 'cause there's more in life than just the Job. Sometimes entertainment is as equally important as struggling with your job, family and so on. It'll help to relax once in a while to gain new strength. And so do good friends as long as they are no toxic people dragging you down along with them.

Do you know the feeling of just living by week for week just to get wasted on the weekends to literally escape reality of the harsh and annoying job? There's a word for that "Stagnation". Most of us live exactly that life especially the younger ones. Conclusion: Never give up, strive to become the best version of yourself. Giving up on "the Core" would also mean to give up elsewhere on life related matters.

Remember when you and Archie began you had a clear vision on what you wanted to accomplish with that mod of yours.

Set yourself goals regarding "The Core", Family & job. What do you want in life and why do you want it? What's your burning desire behind it? For example: Making sure that your child gets the best education someday.

Set goals on a daily basis, on a weekly basis and yearly basis. Craft yourself a timetable on what to do & when. You will realize after some while that you will be a lot more relaxed with a daily routine on hand. It takes time of course. Getting out of ones own comfort zone and adjusting to new daily routines can be tough initially but it most certainly works and pays out over time. Our brains are nothing more than bio chemical computers and they can get reprogrammed.
Ask yourself that question and get started on the process.

Have faith in yourself and have a clear vision. You can do this. I believe in you. :)

If you have ideas and inspiration, you are in the good way. Bad way isn't no time but no ideas/inspiration.

The "I'll probably check it out when it releases." is probably the choice selected by most of the users who still have interest and excited (most of them were probably tempted to select the first choice), but where also a part of them lost a percentage of interest (or more, the excitation) due to the time it takes, and things which moves on on life, and time that past.
Choice I selected because I am still excited, but not as before due to that I said above.
Unfortunately, the last years (since coroshit period & the rest), a lot of programs & mods developers have like slowed down their work (can be seen on multiple domains), due to the fact some things may have changed for them in their personal life, and "followers" also lost some interest & do not support/feedback as much as before, sadly. Sad times!
But some other people who release new "****** projects" sometimes more in order to show something, projects which will never see the light of the day, also do not contribute much, due to the fact this enlarge amount of them & split things, making more interesting projects like "The Core" sometimes harder to discover for new people.
And despite there are usually less people than the past on HL1 engine-based games, there is still a solid database of purists who enjoy all the content, and it is gonna continue for sure, because we can find a lot of good one, and because this is famous!

But "The Core" is an "upcoming HQ mod people would like to see finalized as soon as possible, obviously"!

If you're worried about whether it's worth continuing after all this time or if people are losing interest because it's taking to long, don't.

HL community is well-established, any mod that's worth anything will be noticed, played by tons of people and will get recognition no matter how late it arrives. Quality isn't something that'll diminish with time. There is a reason we're still playing / modding HL, a 1998 game, after all ;)

Thanks for the comments so far everyone. Please don't take this as a sign that we're considering shelving the mod. I just wanted to put this out there on moddb because I've posted this same poll before, but on Twitter. I'm aware that the vast majority of people who follow the mod here do not follow us on twitter, so a lot of the potential target audience would most likely not have seen it.

The Core's development is ongoing and will be so until its completion. The fact is that personal responsibilities always take priority, as does work. Both my day job and my level design job with 3D Realms have to come first because they pay the bills. :P

I'm hopeful that in the near future I'll be in a position to put more of my free time back into the mod.

Really beautifully done mapping, curious to see how it goes. I don't really get "excited" for the release of things anymore though, I just look quietly look forward to when things get completed.

Been following this from it's first screens in 2008, In fact I was probably the first people to even comment on The Core's first screenshot lol. It's still quite stunning to see just how FAR along it's come and how many iterations the mod has taken before it's current build so far.

Keep on trucking, Urby!

I don't even remember when I first learned about The Core; it's been long enough, that's for sure. But my pick is still 'eagerly awaiting/excited' - because I see The Core as one of those things I absolutely must play the first available moment after release. It grows over time like so. I may not be actively excited in a given hour, but it's always in that place in the mind for me - see new info, get excited.

You already know my thoughts, Urby. It will come when it is ready. Until then, I will keep an eye on it and see how it is going from time to time.
Definitely will play it on release, after this long.

You know me, Urby, I'm eagerly awaiting the release of your masterpiece no matter how long it takes

BTW You probably don't remember, but I pitched THE CORE's release against something else I was waiting for. I'm afraid THE CORE lost, I was able to get to Florida last month

I like your determination. It's definitely worthwhile to wait. And one little question: could you say the current progress of The Core in %?)

I would say I've got Realistic Tentative Hype. On the one hand, it *still* looks dope, I trust SnC's work, and am always down for some bomb HL mods by people who know their ****. But also, yeah, life gets in the way, so its release isn't a top priority for you guys, and that tempers hype.

But the moment this sucker pops out, I'll be right there!
