Hello everyone Max Loef here,

Today i want to talk to you about what kind of new planets you can expect to see in TFF (The final frontier) and we go about making them.

Planets planets & more planets

Creating a planet for TFF is relativly easy, our good vorta Ambarenya has created a HUGE list of planets we're adding to the game. This list is based on star trek lore and canon. Taken from various sources and with references from allot of other sci-fi and real life data.

Spreadsheet for planets

We use this spreadsheet to plan out what planets (and stars and other gravity wells) we are going to make and also allows for a grand overview of what has been done and what we still need to create.

Grand Designer

With TFF we will be adding a whole bunch of new planet types, in CTA we created most new planet types with a piece of software called space engine. While this created a lot of nice planets it wasn't a very easy piece of software to use, in TFF we switched to a new program called Grand Designer. Grand Designer can be found on steam for a relatively low price and is an amazing piece of software.

Grand Designer on Steam

The Visuals

Now that you know of grand designed its time to show you what we can do with it. We start with creating the planet in the programm, we can make anything from a nice Class-M world to a huge giant. the program is very flexible and allows us to create pretty much anything we can think of. Here are some examples.

Exporting

The next step in the process is to export the textures from the program, we export textures with specific properties to ensure the transition to the game is as smooth as possible.

  1. Base ground color

  2. Base Water Color

  3. Ambient Occlusion

  4. Curvature

Using those for textures we can start getting it ready for the game.

The base ground color defines the simple colors for the ground, so for a desert planet it would be a sand color and as you can see below on the far right here it adds the grass and polar caps. If you look right beside it you can see the water map, that combined with its own layer mask tells where the water will go and what color it will be. Next up the ambient occlusion and curvature maps add some depth to the texture, we would use a normal map if we could but unfortunately planets don't support those.

You can see in this image how all the maps combined create the basic plantery texture. This is the basis we will use to prep it for the game engine.

Engine Prep

Now that we have our basic texture ready it time to get specific for Sins, sins planets are divided into 2 textures, a color map and a data map. The color map in RGB is basically the main thing you will see, however in its alpha channel you can find the specular or reflective map, this tells where the planet will be shiny by the sun. The Data texture in its RGB channels is simple the night time map, so for example on an M-class planet it would show you where the cities would go and on an A-class planet all the Lava lakes would be visible. On that texture the alpha channel tells it where it will bloom. Bloom is that extra glow for the game.

Result

Now that we've done all this lets have a look at what it looks like in-game. With the example i showed you i was teasing the Class-M Arboreal world a heavily forested would that will greatly benefit any empires economy should any of you be able to capture one.

I hope you all enjoyed this first developer diary and that you'll continue to support us.

End transmission

I think this was mentioned before, but just to clarify, All the TFF planets will be Galaxy Forge ready right? I would love to tackle all these planets in the editor.

Pffft. Carol Marcus and her deadbeat son were amateurs. Not an ounce of protomatter has gone into The Final Frontier.

Are you sure ? Because the upper-right planet in the 4 planets picture reminds me of genesis...

I cannot wait until i bomb these planets from orbit, quantum torpedo style. Will one of these dev diary's give us the full list of new neutrals and their ships? Can one of these factions be time displaced TOS era ship? Mostly so people will stop asking to add the Constitution in. But only make it the old pre refit one with the tube nacelles just to rustle some jimmies. Can another be JJverse ships? i know many trekkies that would give all their gold pressed latinum just to see the jj enterprise burn.

I will not speak for Max or anyone else here, but I am personally a furious critic of NuTrek. I'd say to not expect a JJ-prise from me.

Also, don't expect a full list of neutrals because it would spoil the fun. The Final Frontier is about exploration, remember. Just be satisfied in that there are a lot.

We'll show you some of them, but not all.

NuTrek is evil.

Oh it sure is dont get me wrong, its just the novelty of seeing the bloated, aborted Constitution "re-imagining" and turning it into a burning wreak is all i was asking for. But as a point of dignity i respect your dedication to real Trek. and i like the answer about the neutrals, ill have to wait until release to reload maps a billion times to try and see them all

With all these cool neutral ships in the game, every race should have a boarding ability to add them to your fleet....how cool would it be for those of us to add the JJprise to fight alongside Picard or something? also, all factions were able to board ships in Armada 1 and 2...I keep wanting to add some Yeagers to my Fed fleet but am unable to...

Every faction will have ships with boarding abilities. But as I said above, don't expect any JJ-prise from me.

Good to hear about the boarding abilities.....Personally I think there is room for both JJTrek and Regular trek (your talking to a kid who wore out his VHS copy of STIII in the 80s). Remember, some people really hated to Enterprise Refit and the "New" Klingons on ST:TMP......I know you can't give everything away regarding the game (wouldn't want you to!) But can we expect anomalies that could effect the gravity well they are in? or even the entire map? Just curious....and thanks for all the good work. Also, are we stil going to see a "lost years" variant mod? or even the "Axanar" based Mod? (Even if there is a strong chance of the film never happening?

> Personally I think there is room for both JJTrek and Regular trek (your talking to a kid who wore out his VHS copy of STIII in the 80s).

I wanted to like JJTrek. In fact, I thought '09 was actually pretty good (apart from some plot gripes). But Into Darkness showed me the true nature of this new franchise. That movie sickens me with its lack of understanding of what Star Trek is all about. You can draw clear ideological distinctions between JJ Trek and even the worst of the original Trek movies - one cares only about novelty and/or shock and awe, the other has, even in its worst incarnation, a fundamental humanity and exploration of deep philosophical themes. Or perhaps it's for me a general dislike of JJ Abrams' storytelling. I didn't like The Force Awakens much either. There is a lot more that could be said here, but I think it would exceed the size of this text box.

> But can we expect anomalies that could effect the gravity well they are in?

Yes. However, I'd like to take the opportunity to just say this. Based on a number of suggestions I keep getting, people seem to think that The Final Frontier is going to be this small add-on with only a few new additions. I am not kidding when I say pretty much anything you can think of (within the confines of mechanical and canonical reasoning) will be in this expansion. Do not doubt our ability to devise that little obscure reference that you recalled on Tuesday. If you've thought it, we probably have too. If it doesn't appear in the mod, then there was, with 99% certainty, some discussion which led to the demise of its implementation. This isn't to say suggestions are unwelcome, just...think about what you say before you say it. Ask yourself: would that REALLY be in the AIII's best interests? Does it fit within the timeline?

***Surefire NOs***

- STO designs (with rare exceptions)

- JJTrek Alternate Timeline designs

- TOS or earlier designs (with very rare exceptions)

- "Fanboyish" ridiculousness or excessive novelty

Basically, any implemented ship, faction, or feature has to pass a canonicity, mechanicity, and reasonability filter before it is accepted.

> or even the entire map?

Entire map effects will be confined to Random Events. Most anomalies will be local (because it's a very rare thing to see an anomaly that stretches across star systems).

> Also, are we stil going to see a "lost years" variant mod?

I am not sure what Max is planning for TLY, but currently TFF is taking precedence. If TLY is ever implemented, it is in all likelihood a long way off. I have pledged my support though if it does ever happen.

> or even the "Axanar" based Mod?

As far as I am aware, we will not be continuing with an Axanar mod.
