In all seriousness, how was the previous version lacking? I thought it looked pretty good, but obviously MaxLoef found room for improvement, so what got improved?

Likely it's a less CPU intensive model.

And just generally better. The Loef has had his eagle-eyes on the Romulans for a while now and is systematically improving/replacing any models that he considers inaccurate/sub-par.

There are actually quite a few reasons: optimization of resources, having all in-house models, being able to fix improper or undesired design interpretations.

All in all, it makes for a better experience.

The Valdore's class was never canonically stated but different sources refer to her as a Mogai class or a Norexan class warbird. This is strictly apocryphal, though.

I prefer 'Norexan' as I think it simply sounds better, but most sources describe it as the 'Mogai'. Another sin for which STO must atone...

The novels called it Mogai before STO. I know the first Titan novel did, it came out in 2005. It is named after a species of Romulan bird that appeared in other novels.

So don't blame STO :P

BTW Warship Voyager, just sayin'... Could be popular... Seein' how your doing mirror universe ships...

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

I love the look of the warship Voyager but it wasn't actually a mirror ship - it was a badly inaccurate approximation put together from heavily corrupted data recovered by a race who mistakenly thought Voyager attacked them. So technically the 'warship Voyager' never existed.

Yes, however, consider... The mirror universe, if for instance stole the plans for Federation starships, maybe from Utopia Planetia by a mirror counterpart, and took plans for say... the Sovereign and Intrepid class, they might, given that they come from a Universe with a predilection for violence, modify these ships with "more guns, more engines" as there theme like we have already seen with the Sovereign dreadnought. That would simply be the in canon reason, out here in the real world... I mean the internet, I think many people would like to see it in game, AND have a chance to meet a mirror Janeway in battle. If you were going for a Mirror Universe faction, (I know that there are no plans for that, but still...) It would make a great upgrade on the tech tree for that faction, research the regular Intrepid class, then upgrade it near the end of the tree to the Warship variant. And on a finale note, we never DID see mirror Janeway did we? Don't tell me you never wondered what she was up too, or what kind of person a Janeway would be in a dark universe?

I mean, it's a nice idea, but I think it's just a bit too speculative to be included. It's really reaching out on a limb. Whereas with the Mirror Sovereign, we have precedent in the visual depictions of at least two Terran Imperial ships, plus a third somewhat related Anti-Time ship, the Warship Voyager is pretty much what Orion said, a speculative design half-remembered by an alien race in the future. Plus, it doesn't, to me, fill any real niche in the game -- it's not like we're going to do mirror variants of every hero; that just seems redundant to me.

Marion85 - - 85 comments

Well that is of course your right, and your the guys putting insane amounts of work to make this indisputably awesome mod, so I'll drop it. But I will always feel that not introducing a full Mirror faction is a missed opportunity not to have a little creative fun outside of hard canon. A chance to bring in older ships from the lost era or unseen beta canon ships from TWOK era and mix in some fan variants of TNG era ships. But I'm not a dev, just a player with an opinion...

The question to ask is: how would one implement a mirror faction? You would have to make a mirror faction for every race, then, which simply isn't feasible. Again, you run into the issue of redundancy -- is the mirror universe 'different enough' to warrant creating these new factions. Personally, and I think in the eyes of the team, no. Plus, we only ever spend a couple of episodes exploring the mirror universe, there really isn't enough material to really develop even a single faction, let alone a bunch of them. We are not making up p. factions for the sake of making up p. factions. And then there are considerations with the game engine, which likely wouldn't even be able to support another playable faction. From pretty much every angle, I can't see how it could be justified and don't think it is a missed opportunity. We represent the mirror universe as a minor faction, and I think that is appropriate. If you want to roleplay, you can just use the core faction you want, using their mirror symbol that is provided.

Marion85 - - 85 comments

I know I said I would drop it, and if you had said "We just don't want to do the mirror universe", that would have been enough, or that you just didn't want to do the work, THAT would have been MORE than enough reason for me to drop it... However, that you seem not to know how to execute it, makes me want to give it another go. When I say Mirror Universe, I mean Terran Empire as a faction, not a complete mirroring of all factions, that WOULD be insane, and beyond the scope of anything that could be expected of even a major game studio. As for the question of HOW to make a relevant Terran Empire faction,, it is in fact much easier than to plot out than I think you're giving it credit for, as much of the concept work for you in this regard is already in existence, as imagined by fans, OUTSIDE the prime universe canon. If you do not wish to create a faction outside of established canon, I totally get that, but it seems from your previous statement that your not sure how to make it work, rather than simply not wanting to do it. Because we are dealing with a faction from the Multiverse, were anything that can happen MUST happen, there exists the freedom to do things you would normally not want to try, for reasons of slapping established canon in the face, but with parallel realities anything goes. So let me give you, if I may, my version of the Terran empire, in your game. In "Mirror Mirror" our Kirk is transported to a Mirror universe and sets of a series of events that lead to the destruction of the Terran Empire, but what if those events never occurred, it is the Multiverse after all, if it's possible, it had to happen SOMEWHERE, and the empire we saw in that episode never fell, but continued on the same path that mirror Spock, predicted, and has reached the height of it's power, and is now as predicted starting to fail, and is searching other realities for a means to revitalize itself. As for the the concept work for this parallel fleet, like is said, it's everywhere if you know where to look...

Stourangeau.deviantart.com
This artist here has some good work to pull from and might want to see it given life, and in addition to this, there is plenty of fan made starships that could be placed in a Mirror fleet, just because it's called the mirror universe doesn't mean the fleet composition has to be the same, remember Starfleet as seen through a mirror darkly, Instead of the Excelsior class, the Ulysses class dreadnought, instead if the Miranda, the constitution is still in use, instead of the Norway class, the Abbe class. Instead of the Ambassador class, it could be the Yamato class, or the Ark Royal class, or the original Probert design for the Ambassador. instead of the Constellation class, it could be Goddard class seen below

Startrekships.tumblr.com

or the USS Mughi seen in this link:

Memory-beta.wikia.com

and as for the bulk of structures and builings, well here you go:

Starstation.wordpress.com

And:

Cygnus-x1.net

Also the Mirror Universe has the chance to re-introduce ships like the Achilles Class, and unused John eaves work like:

Startrekships.tumblr.com

I know that this post is far to massive, and might be for nothing, but I just wanted to convey the POSSIBILITIES that this faction could have. If you don't want to, cool, but please don't say that there's nowhere for this idea to go.

I mean, it's nice thinking, but the issue is totally, absolutely not creative ability. In this regard, I am 200% confident of my own and our team's capability to come up and design many new things for our mod.

The issue is primarily the other stuff. Factional representation, canonicity, believability, authenticity. You create this faction, and now you have, for all intents and purposes, two Federations, and only one of the rest of the other playable alien factions. It will feel representationally unbalanced, something which we wanted to avoid.

Keeping this issue in mind, we then come to the problem of the lack of ships. I can count on one hand the number of ships that we see on screen from the Terran Empire. They only ever featured in any meaningful way in five episodes (and that's being generous). The issue is not being able to use or come up with ships, we are aware of all of the ships you have mentioned, but it would not be right to go out on a limb and claim the level of authenticity we do when 1, the faction isn't that prominent in the Trek universe, and 2, would be made up of about 95% beta canon or worse ships. This would really stretch the faction's legitimacy, a problem suffered by several other factions that are sometimes pitched by fans as being justifiably playable: The Ferengi, The Breen, Species 8472. They all share the same basic problem: lack of canon content. A core principle with our mod, and something which we have tried hard to adhere to, is that we only substitute in or include new designs when a certain fleet or game role is lacking. It is very rare (almost unheard of) that we decide to put in a ship for "reasons". We are even hesitant to put in a lot of beta-canon designs in many cases, especially those that we feel are over-the-top or don't make sense canon-wise. We review everything from many angles before it is put in.

Furthermore, we observe that apart from a few minor visual differences, most of the ship classes in the Terran Empire and the Federation are the same basic designs. Again, are they 'different enough' to justify creating a separate playable faction? I don't think so.

And then comes the matter of the game engine, which may be the most important of all. We are quite sure that adding another faction to an already strained engine would cause a lot of problems, might even be impossible with the level of detail we are adding especially with the Final Frontier.

So, as we see, there are a lot of negatives, and very few positives to adding in a playable mirror universe faction. Playable factions should not be put in for novelty, they should be put in because they belong, based on reasoning and evidence. The factions we have included as playable factions are the most prominent factions in the show, appearing in many episodes, and having a major impact on galactic events. There are no other factions that compare during the time period that this game is set in (c. 2364-2379, originally, more particularly, 2367-2375).

> but please don't say that there's nowhere for this idea to go.

This was never said.
