Why start with e1m5?

Back in the day (meaning '96) when servers started popping up on the net, many players were still using shareware.

A server launched on start.bsp. If there was no fraglimit restriction then pretty quickly one of the shareware users would hit the exit to e1m1. If you were on shareware and e2, e3, or e4 was selected you got stuck when the new level loaded.

You would often find most servers stuck on an endless e1 loop.
You already played through the shareware episode a half dozen times waiting to get the registered version. They got boring in dm.

Except Gloom Keep. There was something about it.
The branching paths, tricky teleporters and secrets made for an exciting dm run every time. I never got tired.
And someone made a ctf version with some neat features.

When I came up with the idea for Quake-Hack, this level was major inspiration.
