it simply requires zdoom v2.8.1 , heretic.wad (I think you can still buy it from raven or dl it from steam or what ever it is you do these days) and the rest is history.
In late 2014 sgt shivers made a texture add on to further quake-up the heretic maps.
I also knocked up three new quake themed skies for each episode!
Although not necessary to run, I feel the texture pack enhances the whole quake/heretic mash up nicely and adds further quakeyness to the stock heretic levels. In fact its amazing how different they feel with new textures!
So to run the mod with standard textures your heretic cmd-line should look thus:
zdoom.exe -file quake-dih_3.pk3
and with textures:
zdoom.exe -file quake-dih_3.pk3 -file textures_dih.pk3
and with added quake monster randomiser:
zdoom.exe -file quake-dih_3.pk3 -file textures_dih.pk3 -file monsters_dih.pk3
oh, and gzdoom users should add the file GL_skies.pk3 after the textures. (not vital but totally worth it)
for those who may not know, zdoom limits the textures to the heretic palette. gzdoom does not.
that is why the skies are a rather plum-purple shade in the textures_dih.pk3 file.
however, gl_skies.pk3 has sky textures in the familiar pastel-magenta shade you will remember from quake and as such are much nicer visually and fit in with sgt. shivers textures when playing in gzdoom. but gzdoom only. they simply look like shite in zdoom...
for help look though the info section in the in-game menu when playing (or fress f1 and then enter to scroll through)
oh, and for those who don’t like surprises here is a list of what replaces what in the game;
gauntlets - grenadelauncher
wand - shotgun
crystal – single shotshell
geode - shellbox small
xbow - supershotgun
arrows - shellbox small
quiver - shellbox big/rockets small
dragonclaw - nailgun
claworb - nails small
energy orb - nails big/rockets small
hellstaff - supernailgun
lesser runes - nails small
greater runes - nails big
mace - thunderbolt
maceammo small - cells small
maceammo big - cells big
phoenix rod - rocketlauncher
fire orb - rockets small
inferno orb - rocketsbig
vial - stimpack
flask - medkit (but portable as flask is)
tome - quad damage
ring - pentagram
armour - quake armour
dropped ammo – nails, shells or rockets in a backpack
A minor update;
featuring new/altered weapon pickup sprites, to better match their quake counterparts and also better match the hud sprites in dih itself.
improved graphics for smoke-trail and explosion effects...
Improved gore effects on xdeaths (as of major crisis)
some alterations to the nailgun functions: regular nailgun fires single barrels as opposed to two each time. (as it does in actual quake) supernailgun fires ripper nails 100% of the time now (we feel it plays better and fits well with the regular nailgun as a counterpart this way. however we made it so it doesn't rip through enemies when quadded as it would be far too overpowered...)
and a new crosshair for crosshair3; a simple 'Q' symbol for those that like it plain...
just added some extra quake themed texture replacements here and there including a simple recolour of the mosaic tiles textures from blues to quakes brown tones (it was clashing awfully ugly with the brown water)...
