It was said that the 22nd Century would be heralded as the greatest time of mankind,
remembered as the century that humans spread their fingers to the stars. A hand that
would carry brethren to new places. The greatest technological effort of every race, colour
and creed...the Nomad. A space-faring ship, the first of its kind...built to wander among the
stars in search of anything and everything.
Today was the day, it seemed everyone in the world was watching with keen intent as
shuttle by shuttle 950,000 people were moved to their temporary residence in the skies.
A metallic beast, 22 kilometres long and 11 kilometres wide, ready to pounce on an
unsuspecting galaxy. The reports claimed that the crowds extended out in all directions
around the final launch zone, the final shuttle to bare the weight of humanities future.
Still, human nature is naive and their workmanship critically flawed. They revelled in their
vaunted use of technology and artificial intelligence. Machines created the blueprints,
machines built the Nomad piece by piece...machines patched together the parts to form the
colossal metal bird in the sky.....but, without human knowledge, machines also doomed the
flight before it even took shape.
There are no records of how it happened, or why...there are just rumours from silent
tongues, and writings of cracked fingers. All we do know is that machines were responsible,
they chose to destroy their former masters. They themselves did not last long and the only
testament to their existence are piles of scrap seen everywhere on this planet.
The Nomad fell from the sky, the technological reasons are far beyond us...but it fell.
Upon impact, the critically appraised plasma engines of the Nomad imploded upon impact
with earth, for those lucky enough to be watching outside of the blast radius, time stood still
for a moment, and then with blinding blue light the take off zone was flattened.
Humanity cried in this instant, everyone on the planet felt a unity not awakened since the
dawn of our species, however the destruction was not over…
When the last of the debris had finally landed, the dust cloud engulfed Earths skies nigh
upon 340 years, those times were dark times. Those of us who survived the crash lived in
fear for many years.
Taking with us our technology, and leaving behind only a few outposts, humanity became
moles as they dug down new homes to escape the plasma radiation of the dust, that, like
fine asbestos, could mercilessly end life in silence.
Eventually word came to us from the technicians manning the outposts, to say we jumped
for joy would be far from the truth, as my friend, you must consider we were – are – a
weary people, and little trusting of the ways of those manning the outposts.
So it was that, though cautiously, we surfaced; what we saw to some was a paradise, to
others was a hell, our first glance coming out from our mountainous lairs and caves across
the globe was beautiful green forest, but no sign of the great cities…
The 22nd century was to some our greatest era, the height of technological prowess and
where we were just beginning to accept all cultures to be equal, however now after 623
years on the great clock, and many thousands of generations passed, new hatreds arise,
for we find other… creatures… inhabiting our realms.
