Description
The Nemesis-class Gunship serves as the Confederation's standard troop and light vehicle transport, just as the Nune does for the Empire. It is well armed for a transport, with 2 medium plasma cannons, a double point-defense laser cannon, and two plasma torpedo launchers. This craft comes with plenty of attack power, earning it the name of "gunship."

So, it is a transport. Will it be used in space combat as a corvette? When it drops off units, will it be able to use its weapons?

Like L1K3 asked, is this thing actually able to defend itself or does it just have weapons for show like in the original game?
It won't be used as a corvette as it is essentially a transport with nice firepower, and so it will defend itself in space and when dropping off units. These won't be buildable however, at least not in GC, though maybe in skirmish.
so with the empire and Revenant having new transports, which presumably have a good firepower, will the GA have one? at the least, will the gallofree be beefed up, if possible?
If a model is released of the Alliance's shuttle then yes, they will have a new one as well. It would most likely be this: Starwars.wikia.com or Starwars.wikia.com
Both are the same design, just different strengths and weaknesses.
I'd go with the second if you can manage it. There is also another transport that was used too. The J-1 shuttle, then it could carry a squad of twintails into battle.
