I loved Ringleader's version of this, but i don't think this version is really working that well.

I'm confused how you could like one but not another.

I think Annihilater did a hell of a job with the texture, personally.

Ringleader's style is very unique, almost alien, but the ammount of detail he crams into every shape just works. This is one of his more alien designs, and so i feel the simplified mesh and dark colour scheme don't really work, as zero said on the other picture, the detail is all crammed under the armour, and the dark colour scheme means that stuff is all just hidden away while the rest of the ship is very visually basic.

Is this an optimised version of his original mesh, or a remodel?

Ringleader's in HHF right?...well if I'm right then im guessing Homeworlds textures would be more detailed than SOASE textures :P...I think its an awesome job :)

No, he's ex HHF. And actually, i think SOTP uses higher res textures than we do.

Yup, he's got his own project going.
And we're currently sitting at 5k tris with a 2048x texture for this particular ship.

We use 1024x1024 textures on most ships and only use 2048x2048 for the bigger ships.

Well frankly I love it, detail for the sake of detail is pointless and busy. This design is simple and attractive, with just enough of those neat bits tucked here and there to keep visual interest. I say don't change a thing.

Detail for the sake of detail is silly, yes, but polygon density and detail weighting are pretty proven concepts. Look at the midlothian, that's a great example of canon design that uses great detail weighting with large, flat areas and then denser visually busy areas further back and underneith.
