At last we in the FS-WWI developers group bring you FS-WWI Plane Pack 5. This free add-on to the flight simulator Fighter Squadron: Screamin’ Demons Over Europe is a total conversion mod to convert Fighter Squadron (Or SDOE as we in the community like to call it) into a World War 1 flight simulator. The area of conflict takes place mainly in the Somme region of France circa 1914-1918. With 52 flyable aircraft, two flyable balloons, one flyable Zeppelin, 8 drivable ground vehicles, over 430 Training missions and 185 Campaign Missions to choose from FS-WWI has a lot of content to offer!

Many of you may have noticed I have not been very active around these parts and a bit slow to get back with you. The main reason for this is the Zeppelin L-11. After quite a bit of rethinking, I decided to tackle the Zeppelin damage model to make it even better and more realistic than before. After months of retooling, I have finally done so. I did not wish to reveal this beforehand, as I did not know what I wanted to do was possible or not within the current game engine. Well, it is!

Here's what I've got:

The Zeppelin never blows up the same way twice. This means that when she goes you might see it stall out after the gas bags explode, then head straight for the ground intact and break up upon hitting. Or, you could see it burn up slowly floating to the ground intact and crash landing there if the altitude is low enough. Perhaps you blow it up, and it floats down for a while intact at a steep angle to the ground, hits hard and breaks up. Or, maybe it slowly spirals down, only to break in half mid-air because the massive fire has taken its toll on the airframe. If the Zeppelin crew is unlucky enough, there will be a total frame failure and the Zeppelin will come crashing down in four sections (As it did all of the time before) and the crew won't have any time to even jump out to avoid burning.

Next, there is now a MUCH better looking damaged skin. When the Zeppelin blows, the skin blows out sections, now with holes in the canvas and burnt looking. This of course burns away after a short time (About 2 and half minutes) and all that is left is the frame.

When the Zeppelin gas bags blow up, the crew will now jump out of the fire ridden airship to avoid burning to death.

You can blow this Zeppelin up anyway you wish, and the game will not CTD on you (A problem before under certain rare cases). There are many many combinations on the path to destruction... There are 4 large cells, in any order and the frames supporting those cells and of course when it blows up it could stay whole, or not.

The Zeppelin of course will lose its engines when it blows up if it stays whole.

Ahh, I finished downloading it (finally!). The installer was fancy (good music, but I won't spoil that!). Seems like there's some major compatibility issues with Vista, though. That's understandable from an older engine. I'll try and see if there's a way to get it playable.

Hello!

The installer came with a Controller Assignments Editor. You can edit the joystick inputs with that. :) With Vista, you might need to turn on Compatability mode for Win98. What maps are giving you the worst problems?

Might be just certain maps. Other ones are working fine (I really like the wind sfx). I can't steer the plane, though! I keep crashing. Is there a way to play it without a joystick? The control preferences menu doesn't show very many options. :o

edit: just found the keyboard config app. on your site. I'll try it out.

You can also setup the mouse for flying. For that you will need to manually edit the keyboard.inp file in the 1.6.0.6 FS-WWI Themed Patch folder under your installation directory.

A BUG FOUND in the DVD Installer!
BUT the Good News is that the fix is already included on the DVD :)

If you get an error when trying to launch the Control Assignment Editor, simply browse the Add-Ons included on the DVD and install the SDOE Control Assignments Editor found there. Where you install to is really unimportant because the error is caused by an ocx file not getting properly registered. Installing it form the DVD corrects the issue.

Sorry for the any inconvenience, but at least it's easily fixed and you don't even have to download anything else! :)

Indeed the World War 1 sim pickings were very slim for some time... I do suggest you look up some recent WW1 sims that are in-progress or also released! The newer WW1 sim offerings are First Eagles by Thirdwire (Commercial release), Over Flanders Fields Between Heaven and Hell Phase 3 (Payware add-on to Microsoft's Combat Flightsim 3) and Targetware's Richthofen's Skies (Multiplayer, pay as you go for on-line play).

An In-progress WW1 sim that I am really looking at is Rise of Flight. A truly next-gen WW1 sim for the PC.

Well, there is no way presently Sgt-Smith. When you say bugs, what kind of bugs? You can watch the pilot fall through the ground and see below the terrain, if that's what you are referring to. This is normal. In the original game, the pilots decended far more slowly due to the parachute and you thus could not follow the pilot through the ground.
