Return to Enemy Territory

Time has finally come, WolfPlayers. Since Friday, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Single-Player is available to download for free on Steam, and here on Mod DB, to celebrate Return to Castle Wolfenstein's 20th anniversary. The launch trailer shown during the Return to Castle Wolfenstein 20th Anniversary Event, during which the mod was released, is also available to watch - right below. Get psyched!

Mod DB and Steam versions explained

Compatible with all single-player ports of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the Mod DB version comes with an installer - allowing you to select which maps and/or addons you want, among other things.

Exclusively compatible with Return to Castle Wolfenstein free remaster RealRTCW, the Steam version can be subscribed to (downloaded) from said remaster's Steam Workshop - coming with all maps and compatible addons pre-installed: Enemy Territory User Interface, Wolfenstein 2009 Sounds, and European Style (in a separate item).

Debriefing

Just like many WolfETPlayers, ever since I first experienced Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, I always wanted to see a single-player and/or cooperative campaign based on it, especially since the game was initially going to be an expansion for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, featuring a squad-based campaign, before said component was scrapped and the remaining multiplayer part was released as a standalone. All we have today are rare screenshots of this lost part of the series yet, last Friday, I did what I never imagined I'd be the one to ever accomplish one day: I released a single-player campaign of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, on the day of its 20th anniversary. It might not be "the" actual, unfinished squad-based campaign that was scrapped, but it is based on everything I've managed to learn from it (including a private conversation I had on social networks with Richard Jolly, creative director of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory).

It all more or less started in 2017 when, with KeMoN, I discussed the idea of a Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory story-driven map - one that could have been linked to another mod of mine called The Dark Army: Uprising, released in 2015-16. The idea was scrapped, but ultimately led us to think about a similar concept for the whole Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory game itself: a cooperative story mode starring bots. This project, codenamed ETcoop, was cancelled, but I still tested the concept on my own with a cooperative survival map I released in 2018 for RTCWCoop called Würzburg Radar, based on the villa portion of the eponymous Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory map, as part of the celebration of Return to Castle Wolfenstein's 17th anniversary. Making single-player maps out of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's had already been attempted many, many times, especially since the source materials of said game were released in 2010, and this release of mine was the first actual success. That's when I knew I would make Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Single-Player & Cooperative - exactly 3 years ago, when I released that "teaser."

On May 28, 2019, day of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's 16th anniversary, I revealed Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Single-Player through a live trailer on YouTube. Shown prototype was only compatible with Return to Castle Wolfenstein vanilla engine, and footage only featured Seawall Battery, Gold Rush and Würzburg Radar missions.

Exactly a year later, on May 28, 2020, day of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's 17th anniversary, I held a similar YouTube premiere, to unveil a first look at gameplay - still from vanilla Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Ten minutes long gameplay footage featured the Gold Rush mission, and saw protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz locating and discreetly following an officer from his quarters all the way to a bank, ending as the objective, a Gold Box, had been secured. Additionally, I published the first images of the Fuel Dump mission.

Another exact year later, on May 28, 2021, day of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory's 18th anniversary this time, I have shown the long-anticipated RealRTCW version of the mod - the famous Return to Castle Wolfenstein free remaster, for which I have notably created the user interface - and announced the release date: November 19th, 2021, day of Return to Castle Wolfenstein's 20th anniversary. Trailer also featured a first look at missions which had yet to be seen: Siwa Oasis and Rail Gun.
