Defense Command is a cross between a 3rd person shooter and a real time strategy game. The player controls a single unit throughout the game which is comprised of a number of soldiers and/or vehicles. The whole squad could be a single tank or a dozen fierce warriors.

The camera is situated above and behind your unit and is angled down slightly to provide a better view of the players troops. Control is similar to many third person shooters with the main difference being that the Y axis of the mouse does not tilt the camera but instead moves a cursor across the ground so the player can target the enemy unit he wishes.

There are also strategic elements to the play. As the battle progresses a team will gain Tech Points. As soon as your team reaches certain numbers they gain access to upgrades and can assign special characters to their units. Each side has five buildings in a pre-built base: A barracks where troops are spawned, a hospital where troops are healed, a factory where vehicles are spawned, a garage where vehicles are repaired and a tech center, which the enemy can attack to bump a team down to a lower tech level.

The whole concept is more complicated and deeper than what can be explained here. Each unit has strengths and weaknesses that must be played strategically if a side is to win.

In addition, each map will have a back story to it and the whole mod will have a progressive plot which is revealed as each successive part to the mod is revealed. In this way it is much like in Star Craft or Warhammer.

Finally, it will be multiplayer

The Sides:

In total there will be five sides to play with each side having its own units, fighting style, heroes and back story. For the initial release two sides will be employed being the North West Returners and the Prols
