ANNOUNCEMENT: After deep-thinking about it these days, I have finally decided not to continue updating this HUD project. Actually, I'm centering my attention and efforts on my coming-soon HXRTC HUD release. This one will susbstitute from now the BTSX HUD 2.x project, but don't worry, I promise to make in a near future some compatible versions of HXRTC HUD with standard Brutal Doom (v20 for sure, when it get released) and some BD non-official editions. I'll keep you informed, expect some fresh news soon!
This is an updated version I have made recently of the BTSX-Style Fullscreen HUD, focused mainly on use with Brutal Doom, BD Enhanced Edition and BD Sperglord Edition. It works with the most recent versions of GZDoom, ZDoom and Zandronum.
VERY IMPORTANT! For showing correctly the HUD, you MUST set in Display Options a screensize of 11 and turning OFF the alternative HUD.
The main changes in this BTSX HUD version are the following:
- Retouched and updated the Weapons graphic right panel for showing directly the remaining/total ammo of Hell Missile Launcher and Flame Cannon. Now you don't need to switch to these weapons to verify their remaining ammo!
- Updated Arms bar for showing the 9th weapon slot. (Previously it was only ranged from 0 to 8).
- Edited graphic HUD panels and added approximately a 15% of transparency. Now you will see it's even cooler than before!
- Added new Mugshot panel! You can see now Doomguy's face like in other well-known HUDs.
- Now the HUD has a default scaled resolution of 512 x 320 px, optimized mainly for medium-size PC monitors. Use in console the HUD_SCALE 1 parameter if the HUD is too small. (However, if you are not comfortable with actual size, you can tweak it increasing/decreasing the resolution editing 4th line of SBARINFO.TXT in the PK3 file).
* Changelog for v2.1: Added a new Kills/Items/Secrets counter panel on top left, plus an Armor Type screen display on top right, that allows you to see the armor class you have picked up. (If the player has no armor, the display shows a fixed '---' text instead).
- New Golden Skin available!!! Try it out with your favorite Doom WADs!
* Changelog for v2.1a: Due to several changes and fixes, now there are three separated versions of the HUD, each one for Brutal Doom original, BD Enhanced Edition and BD Sperglord Edition (NEW!). Please make sure you choose the right one!!
* Changelog for v2.2: Some new improvements, plus some new skins available: red Blood and green Slime!
- For BDEE only: included an ammo counter for new BD Pistol and updated nazi's MP40 ammo counter for displaying the 32 shots per clip.
- Redecorated a bit the Key panels aspect, now they show in detail the card keys or skull keys that you pick up. Also, the status light bulbs have been removed (I don't consider them necessary anymore, 'cause the new Doomguy's mugshot does the same function).
- Added a special panel with a white/black Stimpack that shows if you have normal or big strenght (it changes state when you pick up a Berserk pack or a Demonic Rune).
+++ NEW IN V2.3: Now included a new Powerbar Indicator that will show you the duration/remaining time for some special pickup-powers, like Invulnerability, Light Visor or Radiation Suit. Also there are new FOUR cool and exclusive skins to choose from: Blue Plasma, Orange Flame, White Skull and Black Death!
(WARNING: this HUD will only work correctly with recent versions of GZDoom, ZDoom or Zandronum 2.0 alpha. Zandronum 1.x support is dropped from BTSX HUD 2.2, sorry for the inconvenience.)
Credits to Blackfish and the original creators of this HUD, Ptoing and Essel.
Hope you enjoy it. I wish all of you a nice doom-killing!

This gold hud is awesome, updated to 10/10
**** YEAH IT IS!!!
10/10!
Hey man, I gotta say the gold skin looks AWESOME! I wonder why we didn't had that idea before!
Very good alternative to restore that arcade feel, fits right at home for brutal doom!
Thanks everybody for your comments!! Enjoy it! :D
And thank you for the HUD
New update available, I've made some fixes for several versions of Brutal Doom (original, EE and SE).
And now planning a special version compatible with Quaker's Mod... Keep an eye these days! :)
Here I present you a new release of the HUD (v2.2), but this time for BD Enhanced Edition only. It includes some new polishments and features:
- Included an ammo counter for new BD Pistol and updated nazi's MP40 ammo counter for displaying the 32 shots per clip.
The Silver and Gold skins already include the new features above.

Nicely done! I admire your Heads-Up Display modification. I am currently using this addon while playing "Brutal Doom Enhanced Edition". I have a suggestion, however. Can you please modify the "ammo" panel for the MP50? I have noticed that whenever I switch into MP50, the "ammo" panel is just as though I am using the chaingun. I would be delighted if you hear my plea. Nice job, though.
Whoops, nevermind. The answer was just above me. Sorry for my silly question.
No problem, glad you solved it! ;)
By the way, I have uploaded officially the 2.2 version of the HUD, now it supports original Brutal Doom and BD Sperglord Edition. Also new skins are available, please check it!
Oh, dung! I downloaded your updated heads-up display modification, and I am sorry to tell you, I am using Zandronum version 1.2.19929.1. But I still like your addon, though. In fact, I am currently using the gold one (yes, the one that's compatible with Zandronum 1x version, as stated above).
PS: I also like your Brutal Doom Enhanced Edition.Good job in making custom Doom addons.
Oh I see, OK... Just remember that last Zandronum 2.0 alpha is compatible with BTSX HUD 2.2, perhaps you might have interest in updating it, at least is based in a more recent release of ZDoom...
Glad you like my BD addons, enjoy and have fun! :)
Oh... I get it now. Thank you for that suggestion. I will try to update my Zandronum if I could buy some time.
By the way, I can not wait for your upcoming project, your BTSX HUD 2.3, as stated below. So, surprise me on that! *wink* *wink*
Sir, I already updated my Zandronum to version 2.0 alpha (as stated in my other comment in Brutal Doom Enhanced Edition), and finally, after hours of sorrow, it worked!
I need to be honest with you: I sincerely admire your updated heads-up display! Everything is well-done, from statistics showing kills, items, and secrets, to the list of weapons that the player obtains in the game, though I still have no idea on the purpose of the frame right beside Doomguy's mug shot. It's a job well done!
Final Note: Thanks for informing me about the recommended Zandronum version required to make this addon functional.
Good to hear that, and thanks for your nice feedback! :)
Do you mean the small panel with a Stimpack in it, right? Well, as I specify in Addon's description above, it shows if the player has normal or big strenght. It's state changes when picking up a Berserk pack or a Demon Strength Rune. That's it, when you pick up one of these items, the white Stimpack turns black, meaning your strength is increased and you can perform fatalities to enemies with your fists.
You're welcome, keep enjoying it! ;)
Be-thou well, Mr. Hexereticdoom! I had downloaded your newly-polished BTSX HUD 2.3, and I would like to say this sincerely to you...
Once again, you sir did a very well-done custom heads-up display. I personally like your "Black Death" variant (and currently using this while playing Doom). I also like your new feature (that is, the power-up indicator). With this, I do not need to be anxious about my power-ups having no effect extemporaneously (I sometimes find that annoying). Overall, I give it a 9.9 out of 10 points! Keep up the good work! RIP AND TEAR!
On the other hand, I might as well take this opportunity to report you a complaint regarding your Brutal Doom: Enhanced Edition.
The problem goes: As the game levels progressed, whenever the Doom marine takes damage, the "screen cracks" and the "scratch marks" effect are somewhat missing. Also, the Doom marine does not grunt at all (albeit his mugshot displaying pain reactions, including the infamous "ouch face"). I'm sorry, but whenever I encounter this glitch, I feel a slight gaming discomfort because the said Marine would end up being like Gordon Freeman. If you could take time to repair this glitch, it would be pleasing for other Enhanced Edition players out there.
Thank you for your concern and I apologise for the last time if I would not be able to play your updated sub-modification.
Your lunatic marine,
JetBlackAngst
Hello again my friend!
So, you also noticed that ******* strange behaviour in BDEE, right? Holy crap... I thought at first that was an addon conflict, or an internal issue from GZDoom builds, but now I see the problem comes from another location... But I don't have any clue what is exactly producing this stupid bug.
I noticed some days ago the pain sound muting, when I was playing with VileFlesh megawad, when I reached level 22. Stepping on green poisonous floor and Doomguy not grunting at all. Also more recently, in Brutalized Ultimate Doom the glitch came again at second half of E1M4. Not a pain sound. Restarting sound in GZDoom options has not any effect. ******* ****. Seriously, I absolutely have no idea why this happens, I've never encountered before such weird an uncommon glitch... >:/
I'm really sorry for the inconvenience JetBlackAngst. But one thing for sure: there won't be any BDEE v19h release until I discover what the **** is going on with this bizarre bug and what produces it. Perhaps could be a possible incompatibility with some code lump in original BD, or not, who knows... If someone read this and can contribute with any idea about it, he is welcome to comment.
Beside, Sgt. Mark IV announced recently in Fakebook that probably will release BD v20 next December... Hope sincerely he will do it with appropiate code lump updates (and bug-free if possible), and for also I can create the future BDEE v20 from it...
Good day, Mr. Hexereticdoom.
I had read your lengthy reply regarding that glitch involving the Marine not grunting, albeit displaying a pain face.
It was a good thing that you had noticed that as I do. I understand your sentiments on the fact that you have no clue of what triggered that malfunction. Not to worry, I do not blame you for this. It's normal for a video game to have some glitches. Perhaps, you're right. Maybe it is triggered because of some coding problems... but I am no professional programmer.
Regarding that Brutal Doom version 20 releasing in December, well, what a delight! I'm really curious about the new features and improvements that will be introduced in this updated modification.
Now if you'll pardon me, I need to finish my music modification for Plutonia Experiment. Good luck with your future "Enhanced Edition" updates, and I hope you will find the source of that annoying bug.
Rip and Tear,
JetBlackAngst
Wait....I don't get it. I'm really sorry but i'm confused.
To summarise the entire problem:
"As levels progress when one plays The Ultimate Doom or its sequel, Doom II: Hell on Earth, one will encounter a glitch wherein the Doom Marine remains silent when hurt, and its screen effects (that is, "cracks" when shot by the possessed marine and the "scratch marks" when clawed by an Imp) does not appear at all, despite his mugshot displaying pain reactions and his death scream remains unaffected."
There you go, good sir.
As I said before, hope the glitch will be completely fixed in BDEE v20! ;)
Uh, Mr. Hexereticdoom, the "summary" reply is intended for Mr. Nightcaster460. I already knew about that. Other than that, I hope you could make some more customised skins for Brutal Doom.
You are a creative artisan *wink*.
PS: Sorry for the lateness of my reply.
WOW, I love the new skins!!!
And there will be even more, yes, new skins to come! That will be in BTSX HUD 2.3, coming soon! :D
HOLY SHIZ, that BLACK DEATH skin is awesome!!!
Suppose there could be a way to scale these a little bigger from the options? As it stands they're all pretty tiny to my taste, and stuck to the corners at that, so it's fairly hard to keep up with the information at times.
Please take some time to read the description above (quoting it for you):
"Now the HUD has a default scaled resolution of 512 x 320 px, optimized mainly for medium-size PC monitors. Use in console the HUD_SCALE 1 parameter if the HUD is too small. (However, if you are not comfortable with actual size, you can tweak it increasing/decreasing the resolution editing 4th line of SBARINFO.TXT in the PK3 file)."
Oh my gosh the blood red one looks so awesome. Now that's MY kind of hud. :)
It's very good. But HUD is too small. How to did this bigger.
(sorry for my bad english, i'm from Russia)

Hi there! I'm preparing these days some nice updates to BTSX HUD 2.x. If anything goes OK, the next version will see the light quite soon, hopefully before Christmas day. As usual, please stay tuned! ;)
Autoresponding... Unfortunately, those updates are now aborted. I'm quitting from BTSX HUD project, in accordance with my recent decission. From now I'll be focused with my alternate and future release of HXRTC HUD. Sorry everyone for the inconvenience.
