@Munchie009 From the factory, yes. It was mandatory that King Tigers be fitted with the skirts. Many crews took them off, as they created a huge amount of work whenever a single track need to be worked on. They also clogged with mud quite easily and also were damaged easily. There were several occasions where those skirts would be hit by a Sherman 75mm HE or AP or HVAP and the skirt would fold in on itself and jam the track. There was also one or two cases of Americans running up and placing bombs on the inside of the skirts. In one very rare occasion mud on a King Tiger's track picked up an AT mine and kept it under pressure until it was scraped off in the skirt. There were also occasions of Bazooka rounds hitting the plate, and creating shrapnel and a fireball that would travel up the side of the tank and it would injure the commander. Still, the main reason for the skirts being removed was maintenance.

After Railroad Transport some crews dont fit the skirts again because change the Transport tracks for the normal Tracks was time consuming and then they let the Skirts away when under Time pressure and also in Combat u can lost parts , after British Manouvres in Germany in the 60s ,70s i found sometimes Centurion skirtssections in the Forrests around my Village they loose them .And in the last days some tiger were delivered without skirts

This type of armor skirts didnt do much anyway, they would have to use the type similiar to the panzer 4s skirts to protect mote of the track and to prevent it from blocing the track itself when hit

As far as I know these "skirts" on the KT are more like Mudguards and also preventing that anti-tank shells would hit between the track and upper hull.

If a apcr shell hit the skirt it would have prevented the tiger from goign boom, but it also made it stuck if it folded together and hit the track so the tiger. All in all its hard to say what better getting blown up as soon as the shells hits, or a couple of seconds late whiel being stuck on the battlefield :P

it was better because they had hopefully enough time to flee and experienced tank crews are more important than the tank because u can build the tank but u cant build the experienced tank crew

If you look at the Tiger 1 skirts, those little overhangs, it's quite funny that early model Tigers had solid skirts, while the late model Tigers had them half hollow. Quite stupid, but consider how much less material the German army had at that time.
