Bad Fur Day Remake

Early access game review

This review is based on the Alpha release (0.1) and will be amended as and when the game is updated.

In its current state it is very bare. You're limited to one playable character (the squirrel) and one map (halls). Additionally there's only one weapon at the moment.

That said it's building the groundwork for what could be the best re-creation for a long time. We all remember the great multiplayer games in CBFD on the N64; and bringing this to the PC and the internet is an amazing idea. I sincerely hope the devs support local split-screen; best of both worlds then- local for the games with a few mates round, and net for when you're honing your skills at teddy killing!

Just an aside; if anyone likes the idea of porting classic N64 titles to the PC with net play; if you're not already aware of it, check out Goldeneye: Source. It's pretty much the same idea but with Goldeneye 64- and it's a tad more developed at the moment too.

THE CORE: Reloaded

Mod review may contain spoilers

This mod offers an imaginative take on many unexplored aspects of the single player campaign. The use of spheres adds a new level of complexity. The voice acting enlisted delivers great GLaDOS commentary and put-downs. The maps are very well made, featuring breakaway views of the chamber exterior. The progression is nice and well-balanced; never reaching a frustrating level of difficulty. It demands more problem-solving skill and less well-timed jumps- which is always a plus! If you enjoyed Portal 1; you'll love this- back in a single-player test-chamber based experimental facility. You don't break out, but with chambers this well-made why would you want to!!!

OK upon reflection that's not the most balanced review. It's a great mod, that I'm not debating; however it is a bit short. Additionally the final sequence seems a little hurried; I found myself swept into the lift duct while still trying to listen to glados and enjoy the moment.. Also some of the new techniques explored were poorly explained. Granted part of problem-solving is deducing the relationships between things. I did think Portal 2 went a bit too far in explaining everything- hell it was covered in arrows in case you stared too long at a piece of wall! The shallow pool in Chamber 6, for example, I originally expected to be deadly as is all other murky water in the game. It took my a while (and indeed was a fluke) for me to discover it was safe..Those aside however; Great mod!!

Lambda Wars

Mod review

This mod brings the best of the half life universe to the RTS genre; and for those who've always wanted to control a Strider you can now live out your desires with the ability to manually control any individual unit in third-person. I can't wait for a final release with more structure and playable factions.

Real Cars For GTA 4

Mod review

So this mod is nice. It does bring in a load of realistic cars; which is great for people who aren't clued up on importing them themselves. While it is just a compilation of new cars (including textures, models, and handling I believe) it is still incredibly unstable- often crashing moments after I begin to play.

Additionally no removal option is offered; meaning unless you've backed up your entire game directory, you're stuck with it short of reinstalling the game.

Of course it is great to drive around a game we all love in cars we all know, but the stability issues are the main reason I'm rating this mod at 6. Sort out a nice stable version, without the taxi/cop-car bug and it's a 10!

GoldenEye: Source

Mod review

Bringing back the classic N64 game we all loved to an advanced engine, with amazingly recreated graphics, and the thrill of online multiplayer gaming. I could not love this mod more. The only thing it's missing is a single player campaign, but then that's not what it originally set out to do; it's aim is to recreate the classic deathmatches using a great engine and an online community of gamers; and that, I am happy to say, they have achieved.

For those who may be interested; it features virtually all of the classic multiplayer maps beautifully re-textured. In cases they've even designed both a higher quality remake of the original and a partial recreation; capturing the best iconic sections of the classic maps while delivering a more modern take on the textures and details.

All the classic weapons are there, along with classic drop-down reloading, and rolling explosions. Appreciating this as much as I do really makes me feel old!
