Question: How does the selection volume get shortened? I've noticed this big issue on the landing aircraft transports like Orca and Valkyrie.

you would need to Mudflaps and OE it. :)
as they are all set in OE.

If you have a similar sized object with a good selection setup.
You can copy chunk across in FFE in the whe the SEUI. After you delete the original chunk in the whe, you will see the selection changes.
When new models are done, and the selection is screwy, you can just loot another models SEUI.
