I still think making squares and circles in paper and write things like ork boy or ork warboss should be more fun than using chess pieces :P
If you are an artist your 2d warriors may even look like orks, space marines or whichever army you are trying to play it :D
To be honest man, since I couldn't afford a tabletop football considering they were really expensive, when I was younger I used to play a football game with round bases with cardboard players glued on top of them. I had a really small ball that looked like the balls used in real football and the major advantage of this thing was that the field for the match could be as big as the table or floor on which it was being played. Think of it as the tabletop version of fifa :D
