Brutal Wolfenstein 3D

Mod review

Heck yes, these are the kinds of mods I like to see. I had the older version for a couple years and didn't realize V7 came out until a few days ago. Many, many improvements which made the mod even better than it was already. Adding the Spear of Destiny expansion was great. The level in Hell was a ton of fun. I always make sure to mention things I have beef with in mods, but I'm having a hard time thinking of one right now. Basically, if you like Brutal Doom, you'll like this.

Ashes 2063

Mod review

I really like mods that basically add a whole new experience.

Ashes 2063 was really good. Lots of enemies and weapons combat.

Afterglow, on the other hand, was very elaborate. Almost too much, in my opinion. Players have to pay a lot of attention if they want to know where to go or what to do. It's very easy to get lost. Even though I feel like I did just about everything, I also feel like I missed some quests. It's hard to tell. It's set up like the Doom Strife mod; very open-world with character dialogue options. Decisions will affect various outcomes.

My biggest beef was that, despite choosing standard difficulty, I felt it was too difficult. Had I known that before I had gotten a decent length into it, I would have chosen something easier. Instead, I had to slog through some parts with constantly low health.

"git gud n00b" - Because some annoying fanboy is thinking that.

Ultimately, this is a very well-made mod and I recommend it to anyone who's a fan of dystopian open-world FPS games. Beware of the difficulty and pay attention to the dialogue.

The Intern's Story

Mod review

It's ok. Fans of Lovecraftian lore would like it more than a Half-Life 2 player. There's no combat in the first or second parts, just searching, puzzles and sneaking. The third part has some gunfight, but not a lot. Very story rich. Dialogue, however, is very difficult to hear. So, turn the voice volume up if you can.

Underhell

Mod review

This is a great mod. I hope to see the rest of it someday. With the exception of voice acting and dialogue, this did pretty much everything right. It's very difficult and will test your judgment. Lots of suspenseful moments and scary encounters. The story is intricate, but you have the option to skip any of it during multiple playthroughs. If you like Cry of Fear, Grey or some of those other classic horror mods, you'll definitely like this.

Half-Life 2 : MMod

Mod review

Heck yeah, this mod is just the kind of thing I like to see. Brings more life to a game that's already a lot of fun. The included aim-down-the-sights files were very welcome.

The Lost Mission

Mod review

This is great for those of us that don't want to re-buy the same two games just for one expansion (I have the original disc version). I didn't have any issues with bugs either. Good job to those who developed the port.

Regarding the expansion itself, compared to D3 and ROE, it's lacking. There's no artifact, soul cube or chainsaw. There are also hardly any of the scare tactics you'd expect to find in a D3 title. My opinion, the PC port is a way better option than spending money on the BFG edition.

Brutal Doom 64

Mod review

It needs more. I suppose it technically meets the "brutal" standard, but that's about it. The first few levels of the game are a lot of fun. After that, it just becomes stupidly hard. I would have liked it a lot more if it were better balanced and there were actual weapon reload animations. For now, I unfortunately consider the mod to be mediocre.

The Gate 2

Mod review

Ok, so this mod was both fun and very annoying at the same time. The combat was good, except you're given barely enough ammo to get by most of the time. Good luck at the last stage. Pretty much all cut-scenes/cinematics are stupidly long-winded. Nothing new with weapons except sounds. There are some reskinned NPCs, but I've seen them in other mods, such as Ben and Junior from Underhell (it was nice seeing them again). Dialogue is cheap and the main character went from 70s action hero (The Gate HL1 mod) to love-struck college kid. Anna went from tough 40s French resistance woman to **** Alyx Vance. Also, apparently, cheap 21st century political propaganda was a thing in 20th century Area 51. Zombies also have face-huggers from Aliens and headcrabs inside of them. Oh my gosh, that jail part was awful. I had to noclip to the pit each time because it was so bad. A lot of bugs caused triggers to not happen. From almost the beginning I was gifted with godmode. Cheats were never activated, but I was never hurt. Thanks, I guess. Also, why the heck would you give someone the option to leave a scientist alive, as promised, but the only way to progress further is to lie to him and kill him? Then there are the stereotypical grey aliens that have apparently enslaved humans to fight in pits for their entertainment in one of the most overused storyline concepts and the mod basically just leaves it at that. You escape to the Mesozoic era (not Jurassic, contrary to popular belief) and eventually plan to fight back to stop the nukes from a prior point in the mod. The dinosaurs were really cool. I just would have liked to see more than just the raptor alive, but maybe that wasn't so practical. So the guy that screwed you over basically screws you over and you never see him again. No comeback, nothing. Nice. Ok, back to the greys. I was expecting to bring the fight to them and free humanity, but does that happen? NO! Instead the main character dies! The end! I'm not a storyteller, but that sucks. Long story short, the mod is worth playing if you want interesting combat maps, but don't expect a lot more from the rest of it.

Strider Mountain

Mod review

This mod should have been called Half-Life 2: Combine Mountain, because you end up fighting mostly craploads of combine throughout. So, I see a lot of similarities to Episode 3 – The Closure, except this mod is better. Most of the weapons are reskinned, but otherwise have no change to functionality. In fact, the crossbow is basically a sniper rifle with very slow bullets. The mod is very generous with ammo and the combat is well-balanced. Some of the enemies are reskinned, but are also otherwise unchanged. Despite what I said earlier, you do fight some zombies and headcrabs, just not very many. There are a number of striders that offer good challenging combat. As expected, things get significantly more difficult as the end nears. Puzzle-wise, the mod is limited. While puzzles do exist, they don't make a lot of sense in some cases. Aside from that, they're pretty straightforward. There are also occasions where you drive a car with a tau cannon, which is also a good addition. There are a lot of unnecessary cinematics where you have to watch Freeman walk down a hallway or look at a screen. The most annoying ones were when the combine would come out and start shooting and you can't do a d@mn thing because you're stuck watching an unnecessary cinematic. By the time you get control of your character…yeah. Stop doing that, guys. There is a "bonus" level at the end. When I say "bonus" I really mean "final" level, because it's a huge part of the story. Throughout each map, you're supposed to find "easter eggs" (secret areas) to download portal data. If you miss one, you get a crap ending and no final/bonus level. One huge plus to this, however, is that the secret areas do not consist of poorly written comic strips by a guy I've never heard of. Also, the mod prompts you to go back if you miss one and warns you of a map change. That was a breath of fresh air. I still managed to miss one (level 9) somehow, but I consoled myself into the final map because I sure as Sherlock ain't gonna go through all that again. In the end, this mod is worth a try.

Spherical Nightmares

Mod review

Another short and sweet mod. The combat is well-balanced, but the thing I have the biggest beef with is the crosshair being gone. Lost count of how many magnum and crossbow rounds I wasted due to that annoyance. Aside from that, puzzles are present, but they're simple. Nothing new with weapons or enemies, but ammo is generous. The plot makes no sense and the mod ends abruptly. Overall, it's a fun play with good maps and combat if you don't want anything else.
