Insane Lord of the Rings fan, mod tester, and writer of fiction (especially RPs at my staff position at RPGFrontier.net). I'm one of those crazy people who has way too many ideas and can't keep his mouth shut. This is how I got the title of "Head Fanatic," and later Adminship, for the Narnia mod. I was formerly WoA's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, but I've resigned that post for ModDB. Recently, I've only been lurking in the corners of moddb, leaving the PR work for Wars of Arda to the more eager Neth, but you'll still see me around from time to time. I marvel, nonetheless, at the amount of respect I get around here... it's weird, but I guess all you need is a level 10 profile and a few friends.

Trolling Saruman is the best one.

I scorn everyone's conformity, and vote Azog! :p

Although Azog is weaker and more cowardly than Ugluk, that cowardice would make him more cautious. Azog is also incredibly strong for his size: breaking a Dwarf's neck through dwarven armor must be quite difficult. Lastly, Azog is more agile, allowing him to outmaneuver Ugluk in a one-on-one fight.

The histories of Middle-earth really don't have a specific order you need to read them in, with the exception of RotS-ToI-WotR and whatever the Silmarillion volumes are. Mostly, they're just earlier versions of what ended up being published. Some are quite far-out: Bingo Baggins and Trotter the wooden-footed hobbit replacing Frodo and Strider, for instance.

Using my battle strategy, and given a great battlefield, I managed to hold off an army of more than 2000 Misty Mountains orcs marching on Imladris with an army of only 400 men under Elrohir the Wrathful (nice epithet, I guess). Most of the enemy army was snagas, but there were 500 heavy goblin infantry and a unit of halberds. From the high ground just across the Bruinen, I had my 200 archers fire down on the snagas, whose light armor didn't help them much against arrows. Once they began nearing the top of the slope, greatly demoralized because of my archers' range and accuracy, I charged my entire army down and broke them completely.

I think that the best strategy for TA:TW is to have two archer groups for each infantry group in your army. Find a hill to put your troops on, and have the infantry hold their ground while the archers shell the advancing enemy army. By the time they get to you their ranks should be thinned. Meanwhile, bring your cavalry around for a flanking maneuver. As your infantry hold the enemy at bay, continue to fire arrows to reduce enemy morale. Then, when you see enemies that are shaken, have your archers draw swords and mob that part of the line, while your cavalry hit it from behind. Breaking the morale of one unit is often enough to demoralize an entire enemy force. I once took more than 3000 prisoners that way... twice the size of the army I had!

Hey there, just me interjecting some input again. While playing the Third Age campaign as Dale, with intelligence as a priority, my spies camped out in the Gap of Rohan and East Osgiliath noticed that both Gondor and Rohan are pathetic at maintaining large armies. I rejoice if a Good-aligned army manages to win a battle with even odds, let alone a heroic victory. Meanwhile four to six command star generals with full stack armies are defeated by mere captains. Easily.

There's also the issue of instant stacks in besieged settlements. I've had an army of eight hundred or so High Elves besieging the four units trapped inside Moria. The next turn there will be three thousand men and a Balrog inside. This is not okay.

Well, that's my two cents concerning the imbalance between Good and Evil factions. So yeah.

This mod looks interesting. My only problem with it is the imbalance between good and evil factions. Maybe add the Gaurwaith to balance it out?

After re-reading LotR and the Silmarillion recently and taking note of character epithets used throughout the series, I would like to suggest some you could add. For example "the Tall" appears quite a bit, in the cases of Boromir, Hurin, and Elendil. This would probably be implemented as a genetic trait, with three levels or so. Could probably add to authority and/or popularity. "the Strong" could work the same way, although adding to attack instead. "the Faithful" could be the last stage of the Loyal trait.

Anyway, done with my long suggestion. I considered posting more detailed descriptions, but I figured I'd wait to see what people thought of this first.

Perhaps I'm coming into the conversation a bit late, as always, but I was under the impression that Aragorn extended diplomatic feelers towards Rhun and Harad before attacking them. However, it is stated after Aragorn's kingship that Eomer fought under Aragorn's command in many lands, including Harad, so diplomacy didn't work that well.

Also, before the events of the books, Aragorn did indeed go to Harad and Rhun: he talks to Frodo about venturing into those far countries "where the stars are strange".

Rest assured that work is still being done on WoA. We've had a few in-house betas since last year's update, and if my line of thinking is correct, we're reasonably close to our first full release for the WotR era, complete with campaign, maps, etc. If you want to check out the community, head over to our website, warsofarda.co.uk, and post in the forums. We'd love to hear from you.

Hey,

I keep getting this error halfway through the Fellowship campaign. I get as far as Gandalf's quest to wait in the Westfold. Right after the announcement that the reinforcements have arrived pops up, a cinematic of some kind freezes the computer. I've tried loading the autosave, and the game black-screens before the campaign map even shows up. Is there some way to disable the cinematics for a turn?

Thanks,
IRS

I believe deleting all the TA:TW files and then reinstalling the mod (both 2.0 and 2.1) will take care of that problem. In my experience it did: I couldn't get the Fellowship Campaign to work for the longest time until I did a complete reinstall of the mod.

Good idea. However, to keep the group professional-looking, would you mind giving your newsposts a spelling and grammar check before posting? Just a word to the wise. ;)

The North would be quite enough to keep programmers busy for years, if they had a sense of scale.

Of course, distances would have to be scaled down quite a bit, since otherwise it would literally take DAYS to move your character across the map... unless there was a fast travel feature...
