The interview was very interesting. The first time they talked about the Vital-gamemode! Over 40 players per game, Empires devs will be jealous.
Gearbox are obviously criticising Valve owning Steam because L4D2 pre-orders are a huge competition for Borderlands, as they're both co-op shooters and releasing close to eachother.
I trust Valve's ownership of Steam, as a company they have a sound philosophy and offer an exceptional service, and it's because they are a game development company that they understand what our needs are and can tailor Steam to work best for gamers and indie developers alike.
No its about Valve owning a monopoly over the digital distribution system. As in they have the biggest and most successful thing out there if they choose to advertise a game that Valve has made over any one else's game they are doing a disservice to people who use it. What he was getting at was that steam should be a separate entity to Valve so that it wont become that.
This.
I thought the "they haven't done it yet though" argument was absolutely ridiculous. Once it happens you can't undo it, there needs to be preventative measures.
The whole moving to digital distribution thing, as it is at the moment, is one huge clusterfuck waiting to happen. In 10/20 years when every bit of media everyone 'owns' is tied into a server somewhere (or at least the ability to download new media or get 'your' old again if you have a PC fail) and whoever has the monopoly has a problem or decides that content is too old to keep on their servers there are going to be some very pissed off customers wondering how they let themselves sleep walk into this ridiculous situation.
Is this some kind of conspiracy theory?? Because it sounds as dumb as nostradamus
Valve doesn't own a monopoly. There are still alternatives to steam.
But its steam's ecosystem which is pretty much destined to outlast all other outlets.
Steam should be like xbox live, a multiplayer community, thats it
