Plaguelords unit? I hope it is a caster. If you want spell ideas, here are some:
-Orb of Worms- shoots projectiles at all enemies is a radius, like Multishot on tge Manticores and the Moonguard, but deal no damage and apply poison and disease.
-Empower- transforms nearby Zombies into Ghouls.
-Sacrifice- kills the unit to heal nearby allies.

Is cultist new undead Unit? Its name reminds me other game (warcraft 3 ) and its unit named Acolyte (and acolyte's ultimate goal to become undead). Maybe Cultist could be counted as living unit and could get ability to be sacrificed to become other actual undead unit. Also maybe Cultist could get a spell which would allow it to create a chosen destructable (or vanishing after some time) variant of level 1 mine. What would you say?
I was thinking something like this the other day: a unit able to suicide and in the process provide resources.
A good idea. I'd like to see that sort of ability with the Dark Elves or maybe even Ssrathi (sacrifice to the sun god!).
Cultists are an Undead unit (I was playing as Plaguelords when I saw an opportunity to take a screenshot).
They are a middle stage between Wights and Liches and can summon Wraiths. Since they have a cold attack, Guardian Skulls were changed to having an electric attack.
That means Undead now have 3 different projectile units and each with a different damage type!
Does that mean Liches will get a buff? Because it will be more expensive to train them.
They've received a reduction in price cost and have a spell to summon Shadows. The higher the level the Liche is, the more Shadows it summons with a single cast. (They of course still have Call the Dead.)
You remember the Lichelord quest where you kill 20 enemies and get a high level Liche? That one can summon 3 Shadows with each cast.
Awsome.
BTW: this may eliminate the need of the undead to train Wights and Shadows, since they can just summon them and the upgrades work on summons too.
cultists are t4 and liches t5.
in the meantime you can produce all other units. In the future maybe time to upgrade keeps will be increased too. You also have to build up an economy to grow that large and with undead is more or less hard, so you still have to invest money on shadows and wraiths, at least to keep on going with powerful races such as orcs, knights and minotaurs (now dark elves too!).
Maybe Cultists could have the Orb of Worms and Sacrifice abilities I mentioned, with Morph into Lich as the 3rd ability, and Liches could have the Empower spell to round out their spellcaster role.
I believe that it is great idea for cultists to summon wraiths as it reflects new undead playing style (swarming). Hovever the casters name 'cultist' suggests that the caster is fanatic, so it should have somekind of self sacrifising ability (not only sacrifising to transform into liche) .
I suggested sacrificing to heal nearby units, something that definitely fits the Cult theme and the Death theme too, in my opinion.
Well your idea is nice, however I'm not too sure about heal effect. I view to undead as a race more keen on cursing or damaging foes than helping each other. Well, protectors team and not we decides what to do anyway.
Perhaps, but Undead don't heal much anyway, so this could be a perverse form of healing magic, a remnant of tge ways the cultists practiced before he started looking into forbidden knowledge.
I can't wait to hear the voice they gave tge Cultist though, since that is what sets a units personality and theme the most.
I'm sure you'll like it. It has a powerful... impact.
