People that follow Wolfire regularly already know what Overgrowth is. However, many people who stumble across our videos on YouTube or GameTrailers end up confused by what they are watching. Given that we need a new video for the IGF submission, I thought it would be a great time to tackle the issue head on.
Introducing our latest video. The goal was to create a succinct and intense explanation of what Overgrowth is all about. Be sure to watch it in HD.
This concept is in a similar vein to the "Does Overgrowth need a tagline?" post I wrote a while back. I'll be very interested to see how people who have never heard of us before respond. I also hope it's something people can link to when they want to show someone what Overgrowth is, rather than try to tell them.
What do you guys think? (permalink)

WOOT!
The video itself can make any one love this game.
The editor suite looks bad-***. I might actually get this game to play and to mod. :)
PS: I take it you're releasing this on Steam? Correct me if I'm wrong. That would be great though!
Yup, we worked out a deal with Valve. However, please buy it direct from us, instead of on Steam, as Valve takes a sizeable portion of our profit for the privilege!
Will it be in a download form from you? or will i have to wait for a DVD? :)
it is downloadable. If you preorder, you can already download weekly alphas that we release every week. :) In fact, if you preorder, you can convert your preorder into a Steam version once it appears on Steam!
A nicely boxed physical copy would be the option I go for. Any plans for one?
It can also sometimes help persuade the sticky fingers of pirates to shell out for the physical copy ;)
Hmm, I should avoid using my paypal to buy any current steam game for this, but i only 21.60 CDN in paypal so if its over 20 bucks I'm not sure if I'm able to convert it using paypal's rates...
21.60 CDN = 19.54 USD (Phooey)
Then I should save my money for Starcraft 2, and possibly somehow get a ps3 later...
Amazing.
haha, love the "sweet editor suite" part, will you have a build ready in time for IGF?
Awwww crap... I hate steam =\ Having to pay for a game and pay for the download of the game just doesnt work for me... and besides im on Linux. Wont you guys have it distributed on the shelves?
It is really hard to get a game in stores. I wouldn't even know where to begin! When you preorder Overgrowth, you get access to our Secret Preorder Forum where you can download weekly alphas of Overgrowth.
I see the rigging and animation tools(and look pretty damn awesome), how about the actual modeling itself? Did you guys use an outside software?
I asked Aubrey what tools he uses and he said:
3DS Max 9 for 3D modeling
Mudbox 2009 for 3D sculpting
xNormal for baking normal maps and ambient occlusion
Crazybump for making tangent space normal maps from heightmaps
Photoshop CS2 for making 2D art and color textures for 3D objects
awesome:)
Please, please do everything in that Arnold voice.
Hahaha, loved the commentary. Yet another awesome video.
this looks pretty neat. Direct from you guys have any DRM type thingies (online registration, etc)?
Thanks for the vid, this looks like something I'm interested in now. Will the price be the same when it comes out?
We are DRM free. :)
lol, i love this video. Never really got around to buying the origional Lugaru, but i got the demo and played as much as i could of it. cant wait to grab this soon!
I think Overgrowth engine would be predestined for a great RPG instead of an rabbit ninja fighting game.
Overgrowth will (hopefully) be just the beginning. If the game does OK, we will be making many more to come!
I'll be buying for both the game and the modding.
I love the editor. That alone makes me want this game!
Awesome video, and equally awesome Arnold impression.
wow, to be honest, the editor seems to be the most impressive part of the game oO
Will almost definitely be buying this. Great video, thanks for putting the time into it as it summarises the game so far really well and has heightened my interest :D
yep, gonna be one of the best indie games out there!!
It's amazing. This video actually got mostly positive comments on Gametrailers. I guess that means it's officially mainstream. :p
Lol this will be a main competitor against the ns2 Spark engine I guess :D
They need to take away comments from gametrailers. Well at least this time it's not all 'WASTE OF TIME ID RATHER BE PLAYIN COD4 LOLOLOLOLOMG 360 RULZ!!1111eleven'
Thats good to hear. The engine is brilliant, it would be an inappropriate waste only to use it for one game. The levels are really large, perfect for an roleplay game.
