Overgrowth takes place in the savage world of Lugaru where rabbits, wolves and other animals are forced to use paws, claws and medieval weaponry to engage each other in battle. Combining 3rd person adventure platforming with intricate melee combat, Overgrowth achieves a unique feel. Overgrowth also benefits from Wolfire's brand new Phoenix Engine which has been built from the ground up to allow the use of cutting edge graphics, animation, and physics. Add to these exciting features Overgrowth’s realistic artificial intelligence and streamlined control system and the result is an astoundingly immersive experience.

We are trying out a new weekly Overgrowth alpha format today! David himself took a few minutes to illustrate the traditional changelog in video form. What do you guys think?

Don't forget that you can help support us, try out our weekly alphas (such as the one in the video), and chat with other preorderers in the Secret Preorder Forum by preordering Overgrowth.

Be sure to watch it in HD!

The features highlighted in the above video are as follows (among some extra ones thrown in for good measure):

  • Added soft IK bones (such as ears and loose arms)
  • Limited character health
  • Characters can't move through each other
  • Basic aggressive enemy AI
  • Added air leg cannon attack
  • Cancellable animations
  • Enabled flip ragdoll wipeout
  • Acceleration tilt for running
  • Starting footprints and skid trails (used for Super Meat Bunny)
  • Fixed double-click selection false negatives
  • More precise small jumps
  • Initial Berkelium layer hooked up

If you'd like to try out Super Meat Bunny mode, you can download the mod here and replace the existing alpha files with them (everything necessary is exposed to the public AngelScript / shader layer).

Thanks as always for all the support! See you guys in IRC and the forums.

Is a weekly video a good idea? What do you guys think about this?

Nice, looks like you put a lot of work in the animations and it's worth it in my opinion. Nice animations do a lot in making a game look "professional".

I really think you should make the rabbit move more like an actual rabbit. The jump is very "ninja like" but not very "bunny like", rabbits jumps with both legs together.

More "animal" animation would open the door for a greater differentiation between the species that will be featured in Overgrowth. If the rats, dogs, cats and rabbits all move like humans they wont feel like radically different races, only like humanoid animals overall. This would also justify why you chose to feature animals in your game and not humans.

I agree. You make very valid points. The animations as of now are very superbly well done and you're right, they look AAA from a professional studio. I can't wait to see more movies from these guys!

A good decision. I prefer this format for this type of update ( no need even for a dry old summary log ). It's good to see the changes visually in a functioning environment, not to mention that it's always fun to watch a couple of bunnies swat the s*** out of one another.

- The addition of the soft IK is perfect considering the floppy ,loose nature of the ears and you can avoid that " snap ". Gives a nice truer to life look to the movement of the entire model as well.
- The Cancleable's will simply be intended more for distraction and intimidation/intention in-game more so then I'm guessing. Nothing like picking a fight !
- Cool air attack - looks to be quite damaging.
- The run-tilt looks really good !
- The ragdoll wipeout looks alright, but to me it's just too " loose ", especially for combat unless for a fatality. Seeing that effect each time I or an opponent hit the ground is going to wear thin quickly. Perhaps it's me, but I'd like to see it a bit less disjointed.

As always, a fine update. Continued success guys !

Completely agree about the ragdoll effect. GTA4 had that pretty much nailed down.

Jokerme Nov 2 2010 replied:

Because GTA4 used Euphoria, a special simulator (quite pricey I imagine), to create realistic ragdoll effects.

That is because Rockstar licensed Euphoria (http://www.naturalmotion.com)

If you think this game is worth your money: buy it now - you'll help them eat and live while developing this engine (and game of course).
