After releasing Deity Quest and getting lots of feedback, one thing became blatantly clear - while the game was fun for a lot of people, a large number of people didn't understand the mechanics (and sometimes did very poorly and quit). Even those who eventually figured out the mechanics did so by trial and error, taking a long time before they could really get in to the game. From a very long list of feedback and requests, I have polished and tweaked Deity Quest to solve these problems, and finally released Deity Quest v1.1.5!

The main goal of this update was to add information where it was needed - things like the follower's current range (without having to look at skills and equipment), notifications explaining why a follower was not attacking, and a battle log that gives way more information than you probably need (but is still cool, and helpful if you are learning the game).

In addition to making the game clearer, I also added some new features that people had been asking for. There's now a mini-map so that you don't get lost (and can find that darn health fountain that you passed just a minute ago). I also added new items so that you don't have to go through 50 apples to heal your followers later in the game. There are now checkpoints that save your progress within a location, so if you lose the game or need to quit, you don't have to start the entire location over. There's also a second hotbar now so that so that you can quickly access more spells and items to support your followers during battle!

Whether you're a new player or not, this update greatly improves the game and answers a lot of questions that players have been having. If you already have the game, simply re-download it from the storefront you bought it from and make sure the game says v1.1.5 on the title page (if not, please send me a message). To transfer your save files over to the new version, simply copy the saves directory into the Deity Quest v1.1.5 folder (or use DQDB/Net to upload and download the saves). Note that areas you've already explored in the save will not change (no added checkpoints, etc).

Finally, I'm afraid to say that my public server went down (and it is unclear when it will be back up). However, you can still host servers and play LAN games by following this tutorial: Fancyfishgames.com (and trading still works too). I also added a crash logger thanks to @larsiusprime's Crash Dumper! If the game crashes, a logs folder will be created in the same directory where you extracted Deity Quest, and sending me those logs will make debugging much easier.

If you haven't picked up Deity Quest yet, you can get it in the Groupees Build a Greenlight Bundle! The bundle only includes the basic edition, but if you want the extended edition, you can get it on our website for $3 (usually $15) using the coupon code GROUPEES!

I hope you enjoy all the new features in this update, and please keep sending me feedback, as it really helps me improve the game!

Nice game, but the sprites look very similar to DC:SS...

We used modified versions of the DC:SS sprites in Deity Quest - the DC:SS sprites are released free and open source (CC0). This really helped jumpstart the project and fill out the many follower sprites needed. You can see a full list of open source art used in the credits or Licenses.txt file included in all builds.

That's cool :).

There's a lot of grinding.. for this type of game, that's fine.. but maybe 10% less grinding?

Also a larger selection of new followers when you unlock a new area.. atm when you go to say, a new Tundra, you have all of the same previous followers and 1 (maybe 2) new ones. I guess this'll come with time? :)

Almost all battles are optional (bump into them if you want to fight), so you can grind as much or little as you need (and that depends on your play style - obviously going into a boss fight under-leveled will be tougher, but with good strategies you can overcome the level difference)! Also, as you go further to the right in locations, you find higher level followers, larger parties, new follower types, and special chests with cool items & equipment (and you get more experience, so less grinding). But of course, then when you leave the area (unless you use a rope), you lose your progress towards the right.

But yeah, I definitely have many changes planned - and you'll find some areas in game that have a LOT of new follower types (like the first tomb and sky quests)!

Yeah, until we get more players in the server, you'll have to invite someone to fight. Right now, there's a battle every now and then and someone logging in to see if anyone's online (like you did), but no one is available for long.

Awesome! I'm glad you like the game - the video was fun to watch, and you did really well (I really need to get some more tips in there, as some people don't even understand the range/positioning mechanic)! Also, if you want to play the full game, you can get it for $1 (pay what you want) on IndieGameStand for the next 36 hours: Indiegamestand.com

I already bought the game for more than the average 'cos I wanted the bonuses!
And yeah I don't fully understand the ranges and positioning etc.. but I know enough to realise who I need to put in the back.

I've only just realised you can tell a unit which spell to ready next.. shame you can't tell them who to target (with healing spells etc..) It's so annoying when your guy with recharge keeps recharging himself instead of the big fiery eyeball of death next to him :P.

Awesome! For range and positioning, that's one of the big changes I'm working on with update 1.1.5 - I'll be making it a lot more clear who can attack from where, as it's so important to the strategy of the game, but never explained well.

Until v1.1.5, you can figure out the range of a follower by clicking view skills. All skills state their range (like RNG: 2 means that it can attack from the top or second position in the active followers list). If a skill doesn't state RNG, then it is either melee (range 1) or is explained in the description (like an attack that says it hits all enemies wont state its range... nor will a support spell). Skills that use equipment have the range of the equipment.

As for not being able to target follower skills, that's one of the downsides of followers fighting automatically in real time. But, you have my permission to yell at your followers when they are being stupid!

I know this game involves grinding and for the most part, it's very satisfying. Perhaps maybe 10% less grinding? :)

Another thing is variety.. when you unlock say, a new Tundra area.. you find all of the same followers from before and 1 (maybe 2) new ones.. I guess this'll just come with time? :).

Procedural level generator for ICED is done... and it's the most complex I've done (with inter-level logic and progression).

12hours 33mins ago

@_GarrettHogan The survey only included ~4,000 developers (and only those who responded to their survey e-mail), so it could be skewed.

18hours 36mins ago

@_GarrettHogan @gamasutra True, but teams didn't do much better. On page 6, it reported 57% of all indie devs made under $500 in sales.

18hours 42mins ago

@_GarrettHogan @gamasutra Yeah, I know - but still, to be that close to the minimum (even not including those over 200k) is not promising.

18hours 50mins ago

For the average to be that close the the minimum included value... sure, indies who made over $200k were excluded too, but still...

19hours 17mins ago

According to @gamasutra, indie #gamedev made an average of $11,812 in 2014... not counting those that made less than $10,000... that's scary

19hours 18mins ago

@DarkestKale That's pretty cool, a layering system. From the screenshots, I can already see a great variety of combinations.

20hours 4mins ago

@DarkestKale How are the creature images made? One image picked at random from a set, or some crazy procedural generation thing?

20hours 9mins ago

@DarkestKale MUAHAHA! And so your little project will turn into a massive game that never gets finished! Looks interesting though, good luck
