Ok heres something I don't get. Why are they making Half-Life 2 mods when Half-Life 2 isn't even out? Can someone please explain to me: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON.

Nothing wrong with being prepared. You'll be able to hit the ground running ;)

Besides, those teams want to use the new features Half-Life 2 will have (I guess).

Its called preparation, Im glad some mods are spending time on concepts and models before hand - maybe we'll actually get more than 20 odd mores finished for it this time

Besides many people do not know when its out and hence are just preparing for d-day.

If only I could say :( *shakes violently with a secret*

i dont understand modding for hl2 or doom3 .. the sdk is out yet people dont look at it supposedly. all i see is concept and maybe a nice model here and there.. but its all just alot of fluff. i garuntee more than 90% of the mods will fail.. hell, already people have given up before doing any work ! :o
so maybe people should start thinking farcry, or generals, or some other leading engine instead oputting their hopes on a underdeveloped thought gone terribly wrong. the amount is just insane how many people feel they cant mod now but when hl2 comes out it will harness their powers as modding gods. if you cant code, model, map now, chances are- your f00ked ;)

Haha, you can't code or model for Far Cry yet either ;)!

It's always good to get ahead, but some mod teams are REALLY badly informed. People believe that HL2 pushes so many polies, when it doesn't. Haven't people heard of normal mapping?

I laugh in the face of HL2 mod teams with 20K poly models, mwahaha.

lmao.

There is some credibility to those who have declared their mod. First of all it claims your idea before others take it. Although, I have seen a few HL2 mods in released or internal beta status, not sure how that works :S. My mod, Criminal Velocity, has prepared the design, did some preliminary recruitment and started setting up a site and forums. However, we are in a sleeper status. As I see it, there is no reason to start on models, textures ect. on speculation (of course this didn't stop one of my modelers from going of and making a few weapons).

^^

As above. The delay is actually good, when I was working with Project Safan it gave us a few extra months to get misc models (bottles, tables etc) out the way and get really amazing concepts finished and generally get the team working.

Ofcourse you cant legally test your work but still you can work to a degree, a big sector of modding is the models and just because the game isnt out doesnt mean you cant model for it.

with wait, comes impatience, with impatience, comes dead mod.
half the people who add these mods just heard of a cool idea and noticed hl2 had nice previews. no one is strategically using hl2 for their base engine because no one knows how it will perform. they all make the assumption it has a awesome easy map editor completly different from the normal one and that the model poly count is in the 5Ks. it really is a lost cause.

No mods that I work on are inherently HL2, although many have said they will migrate.

I hope the SDK is out soon so people can start to get some content, as people have said that will let mods hit the ground running.

no one would know because theyd never be released. no skin off of my back. dont hype up that which is undeserved.

LETS LIKE MAKE A MOD WITH LIKE TONS OF GUNS AND LIKE CSTRIKE GUNS AND UBER REALISM AND SPACE MARINES AND LIKE IN SPACE AND UNDERWATER WITH VEHICLES AND MACHINEGUNNS AND AK47S AND LETS MAKE SUPER HIGH RES 99654 POLY MODELS AND PERTEND WE HAVE A INTERNAL ALPHA RELEASED WHEN WE TAKE SCREENSHOTS OF THE SAME WEAPON MODEL OVER AND OVER FROM A ANGLE ONE DEGREE OFF FROM THE PREVIOUS .. WHOA !~

sorry, ive seen too much of this. :P

Well, me and my team have not done anything for this exact reason. We don't know what HL2 can handle or what it can really do. People do seem to think they can have ridiculous polycounts but, which can be seen from the screenshots, what really makes it look good is the texture quality and detailing layers. The characters, if you take time to examine them, dont have that many polies. As far as people making impossible mod claims, nothing can be done. Mods are like the markets, they self-regulate. Anything that can't be done will die and that'll be the end of it.

I've been hearing that some of the newer engines are working on essentially painting a low poly model so that it resembles a hi poly count model. The demonstration showed a 7000 poly unit and next to it in same frame a 400 (yes hundred not thousand) poly model and there was virtual no difference. So in essence, this will allow most people to rock the house with their new mods using a lower poly model allowing for more systems (backward compatibility) to run it without a 256MB card.

I don't know if anyone here who is modding fopr HL2 (coming to a theater this summer) has seen this software kit. I only bring it up because I see so many people trying to mod for HL2 which hasn't shipped yet.

It would really suck to see someone spend a year on models and maps and just general design to get the word that it won't work.

I also must disagree about mods being self-regulated. If you have a talented and dedicated team, it doesn't matter what "can't" be done. I've seen a few people (Carni is only one) that have taken the ancient Q1 engine and made some spectacular effects. The modding community has actually surpassed what was perceived as design limitations but in reality it was only a lack of imagination.

My hat is off to anyone who contributes here. Even if it is for a game that has depressed me for so long that I have no more care if it ships or not. I want to get Super Mario Brother 3 for GBA and connect it to the Game Cube.

that's what he said...

Look at Natural Selection. That does things with the HL engine that even made vALVE go "it can do that?"

A very good point. My leader said that 27,300 polies were possible for HL2, but as usual, he was misinformed. So here I am, optimizing and cleaning up my models when it could have been avoided.

...And they use normals maps in HL2? I thought only DOOM3 had that! I'm glad you told me! Thanks! :D
