Description

In the original design, subtitles in the active game are shown without a background, while dialog subtitles are shown with a background. I consider this to be a design error since there is no point in using a different style for the same aspect of the game; they are both subtitles. So I had to choose one style for both.

Considering that both Fallout 3 and New Vegas use subtitles without backgrounds for their introductory scenes, and such scenes are well polished by developers, I decided to ditch this background for good in version 9.07. Subtitles without background simply look better and allow the dialog menu to feel more like part of the active game instead of a static menu.

Readability is still guaranteed by using the right font and a technique that provides extra outlining.

Based on typographic standards, each line is reduced to 60-70 characters and orphaned words have been eliminated in almost all subtitles using a special technique. You'll almost never see a single word hanging in the last line.
