Best Original Art Direction in a Total Conversion
It used to be that most mods were just a single level or weapon. It wasn't until the advent of the total conversion that mods really became a big deal to most people. People banded together to form teams and design a whole new game, creating all the art assets from scratch, on top of a engine platform. Of course, this introduced a whole host of new problems. Fast forward to today and you'll find that the majority of total conversions started never see a full public release.
TC developers have to learn the disciplines of game design and make a commitment that measures in years in order to even have a total conversion resemble their original vision. The TC's nominated for this category have all achieved a visual fidelity that approaches commercial-level quality. This is an accomplishment of which all teams involved should be proud, considering everything you see has been created entirely by them.
The Delta Sector
Far Cry
PlatinumGold wrote: The Delta Sector is a modification for FarCry which will meet the highest quality expectations and will use the full capacity of the Cryengine 1. There will be new weapons, new vehicles and new enimies in this mod. You are a member of a special forces team. It's your job to check what's happen in eastern europe, because many military forces accumulate in one area.
Age of Chivalry
Half-Life 2
Age_of_Chivalry wrote: Age of Chivalry is a total conversion for Half-Life 2 currently being developed by Team Chivalry. We are a close group of friends who are dedicated to creating a fun story driven multiplayer experience set in a fantasy world in the medieval ages. We are creating a fast paced and fun first person melee combat system that will take the player to a new level of immersion. The players will be able to take part in sieges, town raids and open war in a story driven game. Our goal is to let the players write the history of the game as the teams battle it out over a sequence of user controlled map cycles depending on the victor. We want to take the overall experience to a new level of fun.
D.I.P.R.I.P.
Half-Life 2
Exor_Studios wrote: D.I.P.R.I.P. is a Half-Life 2 multiplayer total conversion. Gameplay is based on vehicle combat in various post-war environments. Vehicles use multiple weapon mounts which are activated by finding weapons scattered around the battle grounds. Planned game types are deathmatch, teamdeathmatch and capture the flag. There will also be a possibility to enable players to upgrade their vehicles' weapons and subsystems through the use of a 'money for damage' system. Action takes place in varied post-war sceneries. Key places in the post-war world are areas rich in uncontaminated water and fueal. Most of the terrain has been left in a mechanically unchanged state. Abandoned city centers, hipermarkets, refineries, country food storages, old military bases and other such places are the scenery of raging battles.
Dystopia
Half-Life 2
Dystopia wrote: Dystopia places the player into tense combat situations in a high tech world spanned by computer networks. As either Punk Mercenaries or Corporate Security Forces the player will fight through the physical world to gain access, via jack-in terminals, to cyberspace.
Cyberspace is a three dimensional representation of the world's network. Inside cyberspace players will launch programs to hack into systems linked to the physical world while fighting off enemy hackers and defending critical systems. Gameplay progresses through inter-linked physical and cyberspace objectives, some are completed in either the physical world or cyberspace, others only by a well timed combination of the two.
Whether the player is a heavily augmented combat mercenary armed to the teeth with the latest in firepower, or a twitch reflex cyberdecker racing to infiltrate a cyberspace node; they'll be immersed in an action packed battle. Only through skillful use of the high tech arsenal we're making available and intelligent team play will players truly jack-in and kick ass.
Killing Floor
Unreal Tournament 2004
Mr._Kadish wrote: Killing Floor is a survival horror total conversion set in London, England. In a laboratory under the city, a series of human experiments in cloning and biological augmentation are being conducted by the employees of "Horizon". Horizon is a BioTech corporation formerly employed by the government to do the R&D on a top secret series of synthetic combat drugs which would enhance the effectiveness of soldiers in the field.Horizon's funding was cut, when their practices were deemed too immoral even for such a controversial project, but the research didn't stop. Funded by private money from the deep pockets of Horizon chairman and research scientist Kevin Clalemay, tests continued in a more...private location. That was until something went wrong. There were reports that the lab had been comprimised; that the subjects were behaving abnormally...then, silence. Several days later, twisted shapes began to emerge from the confines of the lab into the city above.

I think DIPRIP could definitely win, the art direction is quite different in a griddy kind of way.
If I had to choose it would be Dystopia or The Delta Sector.
Delta Sector. Some of the things they've done in that engine are up to Cry Engine 2 standards, except for the guns. It's all so consistent, I think it has it.
Dystopia is the better one in my opinion.
I think DIPRIP wins in TDM or CT deathmatches only for some rounds playing with friends or people around the world with fast driveable cars with massive firepower. It's a fast mod. This mod is good for sometimes Play. but it's definitly one of the best HL Mods i've ever played.
Dystopia.
Even though I hate it.
I hated Dystopia for the longest time till the newest update came out.
And yeah i think Dystopia will take this event.
I think you're right. I dislike Dystopia too having played it and, well, the gameplay is very "meh" and I don't like hostile servers ( meaning elitism and bashing newcomers or just being plainly rude, snorty and well... elitists ).
What goes though for the art direction they have it nailed and this award is about the art direction and not if the game is any fun so viewn from this perspective I think they made it.
Dystopia in my opinion...
Delta Sector.
It would have to be Dystopia for sure, mostly because the other options are based around real world like locations.
I couldn't say it better myself.
Dystopia for sure, my favourite mod too nonetheless! :D
I agree Dystopia has gone the furthest. I'm not a big fan of the art style and by that I don't mean cyberpunk :P But that aside they put a lot of effort into it and I believe deserve to win this.
Loved Age of Chivalry and D.I.P.R.I.P. but while both have some excellent art. Dystopia couldn't be what it is today without going all out.
Also can't believe how good "The Delta Sector" looks. I was surprised when I realized it was a FC1 mod and not Crysis. Nice work guys.
Good luck all
I will say Killing Floor. There is NO trace of UT2K4 left on that game. And seeing as the art director, programmer, modeler, and animator are PRETTY much the same person... (Most of it was XD)
Dystopia has a good chance definitely as does age of chivalry IMO. Both have gone away from what anyone would have rogiinal expected and brought something new and innovative to the source engine.
DIPRIP is good, but I feel like I'm playing HL2 when I play it, just with cooler vehicles and mass of explosions. Great game but I don't feel it will win this award. Delta Sector I never DLed but from the ingame vids and pics it looks like a good game, but I don't know how to judge it for this contest. I will agree it looks more like Farcry 2 or crysis then farcry 1.
Just have to see how this plays out! Good luck mods!
Delta Sector.
hands down
Dystopia,but i want see D.I.P.R.I.P :P
2nd day... 2nd presentation of FPS
If Killing Floor doesn't win this... I'll probably stare in disbelief for afew seconds, then shake my fist at the moddb staff. While its not the prettiest, the art is like no other mod or game out there.
Delta Sector would come in second. Making an old engine look new is amazing, but the acual art isn't original.
Nothing about HL2 art is original, ever. (excluding that Zeno Clash)
I will agree that from MOST sourcemods it always still feels like HL2. Zeno clash isn't a mod but it runs as Dark Messiah did (Another source made GAME not mod), being completely new and unique to most games of the genre. They are basically given the STOCK Source engine so there's nothing HL2 about it and they can go beyond any mods capabilities.
HL2 mods are too easy to tell most of the time because valve seems to have locked interfaces and animations that are VERY hard to modify even though it seems like a simple task. How many HL2 mods have you played where all the monsters have that standard zombie animation (Headcrab) and the melee weapons make your characters fold in half?
Out of the sourcemods listed I find Age of Chivalry resembles source the least which IMO counts for quite a lot for a TC mod. Dystopia has good mechanics and a lot of work but personally I didn't get hooked from it. I liked the music but the mechanics (at first confusing as ****) just seemed a little boring and cliche once I got how they worked. I could see it being fun for a large group but I just found it another UT/Quake styled hop em pop em shooter even featuring weapons resembling a railgun. Definitely a lot of heart and soul was put into it but I don't believe it really pushed away from the HL2 feel I got while playing it.
It's just my opinion and maybe Dystopia just wasn't my style but I'm still for Killing floor with Age of Chivalry at a close second.
I would pick Delta Sector as I worked with the Cryengine 1 myself and it is astonishing what they got out of this old engine! Far Cry all the way! :)
I would say Dystopia eventhough I like Killing Floor most out of the lot.
Was all for Dystopia till I scrolled down and saw Delta Sector...
Can you have a tie, just this once...
Art direction is not necessarily about originality or having wild, crazy ideas.
It's about making a product with an consistent feel to it, based on it's original concept. All nominees seems to have very good art direction in my opinion.
True. However, this contest is about best ORIGINAL art direction. :D
Delta sector ftw :) it looks so awesome compared to original far cry
My bet is Dystopia.
Although i don't like dystopia to much i would say there artstyle is deffinitly the most original.
pvk2
Dystopia, absolutely.
Delta Sector, hand down!
delta sector
engine makes a difference
Delta Sector, cause they used the CryEngine 1 as it should be.
I put my bet on the amazing art style of Dystopia... (I would also put my vote as best gameplay with it's dual-layerd, campaign, push style maps...)
Killing floor.
The only mod that feels like a whole different game.
Dystopia.
Killing Floor beats all of their ***** any day. Its a complty new game and is made to a superb standad XD
Dystopia. Although the new team has not did evolve the artistic part of Dystopia. Or rather too anecdotal.
No offense to anyone, but I play dystopia and hardly every go into cyberspace. Other than the class models and cyberspace, there really isn't anything very unique or stunning about the environment. Most people don't go into cyberspace much, despite what the game trailers make it appear.
So while there is some unique art in the game, it is not a large part of the games environment.
I could see dystopia taking this one. Although both delta sector and diprip are some tough contenders in their own respective rights. Delta Sector just screams war when you look at it, and diprip has this fantastic apocalyptic feel to it.
But in terms of art, dystopia definitely shows some grand originality, however, as kerensky pointed out, the cyberspace rarely is seen in-game.
Who the hell down-rated this? Come on folks... don't misuse the system so obviously U.=.U
Damn! Deta Sector sure looks pretty.
only 16 min!!!
0 minutes :P
I think itll be Delta Sectar.
Wow Now that ive had a proper look at it. Delta sector desevers it hands down. (Killing Floor Still Second XD)
Congrats to the winner - Delta Sector.
Way to go Delta. I have to admit that the scenery was beautiful.
Good pick. Guessed this one wrong this time. Let's see the next one :D
Congrats Delta Sector! You deserve the prize :)
