Focus on melee combat (nerf range, boost melee dmg, alter monster dmg/behavior, add blocking (stun monsters), shield deflect projectiles, push backs).

  • 15x weapons with alt fires, and R'eloads.
  • 3x "grenades" (quick keys)
  • slower run speed
  • Tweaked some pickups and artifacts (quick use keys).
  • include Neural hiRes textures without actors (to avoid resolution dissonance with new animations),
  • new monster death/wound/melee/pain animation
  • smooth animations [12 frame walk]
  • include PY weapon wheel (set on Capslock in options)
  • include Fullscreeen Status Bar mod (turn on in HUD options)
  • randomize door keys (pick random 3 of 6 colors, at start of each map)


    Bitter is .pk3 mod for GZDoom, it doesnt work with Zandronum.

yes, all doom (heretic) levels are design for pistol start.

its much better to play this way. The joy of finding weapons occur multiple times. You are not overpowered for level challange.

i add options to turn off wand start in menu, if you dont like it.

i do not have assets for them. But most important, i do not have a will to do it.

you can find rats (sometimes) in barrels as an ally.

Well your mode is great,i hope you work on some improvement.I mean its the only mode for Heretic i found worth playing,this and HeXeReTiC Fantasy.Seriously there are no modes for heretic out there.But Doom 2 has thousands of modes.

i make a new version on forum zdoom. some time ago (11 sept 2021). But there is not too much new feature (the new blocking animation with wand is maybe the biggest novelty).

with Bitter I more or less achieve what i want. There are stuff i wish i could add, but its a lots of work (or learining how to do it).

do you have some of your ideas how to improve Bitter Heretic? Something you wish were added?

you mention allies, but with allies problem is:
-bitter just change gameplay, it doesnt change maps (how would you add companion, as a item that you pick up and use? like Maulotaur summon in Hexen? even if i would need to replace some existing item on map for that)
-i dont have resource for allies (sprites), this is the biggest chunk of work to do really
-i have no clue how to make working ally AI - unless the rats level of AI is sufficient in your opinion.

sorry,I dont have any idea about mod making.If you dont know how to implement ally AI,then i guess there is not much to do here.Its a cool mode regardless.

thanks, i have plans to make next update. But i lose the motivation. I want to add autoaim for melee attacks, or AoE sword attack f.ex.

is there any improvment you would like to see?

this is a mod. I need to replace existing monster on maps.

Thankfuly there are ghosts variants, which are quite boring.

there is one ready monster Warrior from Myth, that I need to implement only, write him code.

I could take Ettin monster from Hexen.

Too bad there is bilions other things I would like to do :D

Ettins, serpents and centaurs would make a great addition to Bitter Heretic, all these monsters have their own behavior and strategies that have to be used against them. With such cool weaponry it would be a shame no to see them tested in new tactical scenarios. Btw. I just love that huge sword you've implemented, Lagi, it sure does the trick.

P.S. Love the addition of a knight from Myth, TBH I wasn't expecting to see a sprite from that game, that's and example of a out of the box thinking if concerning the resources.

P.S. II There's a nice medieval fantasy game created on the doom engine called "Amulets & Armor" I bet that there is some good content that may be of use to you. Daggerfall also has a lot of stuff that can be reused.

P.S. III Hahaha, that's a third one in the row. I was thinking about a warrior from Hexen as one of the enemies, I mean the player character sprite, it has some potential for a mini boss or something.

Yeah, Myth warrior is monster i always wanted. From the very begining in 90' I have a feeling the game need humanoid enemies.

With new monster problem is they need tons of new sprite to be in line with my updated heretic monsters (new deaths (ice,fire, alternative, gibs), new attacks).

the best would be to make total conversion with new maps, and new monster placement. Too bad i have no clue how to make maps, nor im interested to do so.

I wonder if there's an option to make a leveled spawn like in Project Brutality, the idea of leveled monsters that replace the weaker ones to match your constantly evolving arsenal is just simple, yet excellent.

Anyway, I can imagine the amount of tedious work that goes with sprite editing, moreover I also get that feeling of being burned out, so no sweat bro, I was just brainstorming. :)
