The Avignon captivity of the papacy is a historiographical term used to designate a period in the history of the church when the papacy was most loyal to the French crown and was located not in Rome, but in the Provencal town of Avignon. This expression was coined by the humanist Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374), who lived for a long time in Avignon at the papal court. Petrarch compared the current state of the papacy with the "Babylonian captivity" from the Bible. On the letters he sent from Avignon, he wrote "Babylon". Since Petrarch was an admirer of antiquity, he was indignant that the Representative of God chose "the city of shepherds and ploughmen" as his residence instead of "The Eternal City". He disliked this city so much that he preferred to live in the village. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, that was the name of this place, Petrarch remembered all his life. The toponym Vaucluse comes from the Latin name "vallis clausa", which means a secluded valley.

The game begins in 1313 on the eve of the death of Pope Clement Ⅴ. The interregnum that came then became the longest in the history of the papacy. The new pope, elected in 1316, made Avignon his capital.
