Bishop Hugues Geraud of Cahors, fearing punishment for his crimes, planned to kill Jacques Duese (Jean XXII) with the help of magic. To perform the ritual, he ordered wax figures of the pope and two of his entourage. But the conspiracy was discovered and an investigation was launched against the bishop. Coincidentally, Duese's nephew Cardinal Jacques de Via, one of those whom Hugues tried to enchant, died at this time. Dejected by this circumstance, the Pope handed over the "sorcerer" into the hands of the secular authorities. He was burned in Avignon on August 30, 1317.
