Defenders

Here come a bunch of changes!

Hello there! It is a great time to make an update!

What's new?

You will find in the latest version: a lot of bug fixes, improved stability and a bit of new possibilities for mappers. There are two new flags for spawn spots to prevent them from triggering when it's boss wave and to prevent spawning of flying monsters in this specific spot. It was a problem to create sewers or a cave which is supposed to be a spawn point for walking monster only, because flying monsters could appear there too and flying monsters need a bit more space actually, so they could function right. There are also two new entities to create weather: fog entity and rain/snow entity, it's very easy to use them and the result is beautiful. To prove my words I wanna show you a new map - Winter Town.

Winter Town 1

Winter Town 2

Winter Town 3

...but I suggest you to figure it out yourself, in-game it's even better!

For other changes I suggest you to take a look at change log, which is placed as always in change log article.

Map SDK was updated too, it has updated FGD file and a map source (pve_tomb). It's available here.

Discord

Our community has an official Discord server. It's the easiest way to contact me or to find a mate to play with. There you can find some interesting content also. I'm posting different snippets, screenshots and other content from development process. Join us!

Information Pages

I don't really know how many Base Defense players remember all the versions of Information Pages site, which began as wiki-like site. It was a kind of little database containing information about in-game items, monsters, skills and other. Well, I have good news: Information Pages are up again! Now the site contains Base Defense Manual - a guide for newbies. I think old players will be able to find out something new too, despite it's about basic things mostly. The site is clean and simple. Base Defense Information Pages. It's also set as a home page for this mod profile.

Steam

Don't forget about Steam version of the game! It features cosmetic items, achievements, in-game events on holidays (like when you need to collect stuff to get an epic reward), a lot of servers and much more!

Thanks for your attention ;)

Have a nice day and keep on defending!

Okay, so after playing this enough. The difficulty/overall balance of the game is not good at all. It was atrociously difficult and not fun at all. You find yourself getting swarmed in early waves with little to defend yourself with. As a result, you have limited options, so your progression is hampered severely. I end up just inputting impulse 101 everytime I start up, because by the time the 2nd wave rolls in, you're getting enemies that move too fast to be able manuever around and do significant damage. The only map I could make any sort of progress with, was Neon lines. Not much in the way of customization as to how much cash and XP you get. Because those are so low, you end up not being able to purchase most weapons, because by the time you get to wave 2, you're being swarmed by enemies who move faster than you, with limited room to manuever around them.

Options to increase your XP gain, your Cash Gain, and how many ability points you gain per level up would be very helpful suggestions, as well as increasing the amount of salvage you get from kills, and wave survival.

Honestly, this has great potential, and I like the concept, but the execution was poor and needs a lot of work. You're not given nearly enough to defend yourself with early on, and early waves are extremely difficult to survive because of this.

Very poor balance with, and extremely difficult with not many ways to fight back due to lack of funding. Progress doesn't save all-around and is tied to a file (which isn't bad) but is tied to a specific map. I'd like to be able to carry my character across the maps, and start from early waves or later waves through the option menu as well.

A lot of these weapons are very expensive, so you're either stuck with the blaster, and glock (except for neonlines, no glock when you spawn.), and a melee weapon. You don't make enough cash to get the weapons, by the time the 2nd wave comes around. Plus the amount of cash you make from kills is random. So is the XP, so progress has some randomness, and no real consistency. So, it could take shorter or longer to get to the next level.

When you buy weapons on the wall, you should get some extra ammo. Being given a weapon with no extra ammo in reserves isn't great, and you're relagated to buying more ammo for that weapon, which forces you to stick with that weapon.

Hopefully the next versiion that comes out, can fix these issues, because it's not enjoyable.

Also, I'd hope to be able to fully upgrade my weapons in the next build of the mod. That'd be helpful, and I'd like it personally.

Also, why are some of the cheats (godmode, noclip, notarget) disabled?

First of all, did you play Steam version of the game, which includes Softcore difficulty? Steam version has also another monster ladder which doesn't spawn Panthers on Softcore, and spawns them less often on Vanilla difficulty.

If you played ModDB version then it was not really made for newcomers, but only experienced gamers. I was making difficulty high, because it was just easy for a lot of mod regular players and myself of course.

I am working on a new update, which will make Softcore more soft and enjoyable, but you still won't be able to get huge amounts of money. This is because of the mechanics of the game you need to learn: ammo costs money, damage costs money if you want to EARN money, then you need to use SOMETHING to increase your damage outcome for cheap. Skills give free damage, melee weapons damage is completely free. You NEED to use every possible way of dealing the cheapest damage. Do not waste your ammo.

Characters are bound to a map for a reason, all maps are different: some maps let you buy weapons you can't buy on other maps, some maps may be easier or some maps can have much more monsters spawns which will end up in completely different results between the players. Just pick the map you like the most and play it.

"Plus the amount of cash you make from kills is random. So is the XP, so progress has some randomness, and no real consistency. So, it could take shorter or longer to get to the next level." It's not true. It can depend on which monsters spawn, but you get your xp/money reward basing on how much damage you did to the monster. The maximum reward is 10% of its maximum HP.

I can make addition of extra ammo to the gun you buy but its cost will increase.

Weapon upgrades system is being reworked, with each new upgrade your weapon damage doubles as its ammo cost. In current version upgrades increase ammo price too.

The game is basically multiplayer and these cheats do not work in multiplayer.

I played the moddb version, and was not aware of their being a Steam version of the mod until now.

I'd say in the future. Have seperate downloads for a hardcore and softcore version of the mod as a suggestion on here. That way, people know clearly what they're getting into.

A lot of these suggestions where geared towards the Hardcore version I had no idea I was playing. I just figured you intended the gameplay to just be difficult from the start, with not much consideration for balance. In other words, extremely difficult gameplay, all-around, and just one single version.

Again, I didn't know was the Hardcore version. I didn't even know there were 2 seperate versions of the mod. All I just saw was the latest version, and older versions on Moddb.

There is no actual Hardcore or Softcore versions. I mean the ModDB version wasn't updated for a while now, but Steam version had several updates and one of them had new feature - difficulty selection. On Steam version Softcore mode was set by default. ModDB version just doesn't have it, only original difficulty. I plan to update ModDB version too.

Stay tuned! Some new version Softcore tests were done by our beta-testing squad and it feels so smooth. I enjoyed it very much, even when I prefer original difficulty.

Well, this is the only one I was aware of, and to be honest, I would have assumed that the Steam version was just a backup/alternative way to download it, in comparison to this.

I understand, but the reason Steam version has latest updates is simple. It has good tools for developer to push updates.

I wanted to add it couple years ago, but it has a poor quality model even if compared to another cut monster - Panthereye. It was meant to replace a Zombie, which was cut from Base Defense because it's slow and boring. Well, Zombie returned in his new incarnation, he learned how to run.

It's not that slow or boring - the alpha version of panthereye was only replace a zombie,

Panthereye is fast and jumps at player, try to fight it in Steam Hardcore mode, players were so scared of Pathereyes I had to remove them from Softcore and move them higher in HC ladder.
True story.

Great mod, really made the traditional Half-life mechanics feel modern in-tune with the Horde-style systems we see in most shooters and stays fun throughout. Alot of balance problems though, most noticeably the AI-pathfinding which is so horrendous at finding players hiding in spots that its game-breaking at times. However with 4 players running around the map proper, its a blast.
