It never occurred to me that the Ferengi would be such a long lived species.

There's no definitive source for their normal lifespan. In some beta canon sources it's stated that their lifespan could be equivalent to that of Vulcans.

All we know is that, when we first meet him in DS9, Zek has been Nagus for nearly a century. Given that he would have had to have had a substantial and highly successful business career before becoming the Nagus, we can deduce a normal lifespan of 150-200 years, with approaching 300 not out of the question given the medical care available in the Trek universe. Remember, by the 24th Century it's not unheard of for humans to approach 150.

Whatever the case, we should keep in mind that Zek grows to exceptional old age. I doubt his longevity is the norm.

A Ferengi cargo freighter arrives in the system looking for parts and salvage. It's captain, a veteran of many deals, takes stock of the large assortment of vessels and soon-to-be repaired hulks littering the space around a huge station. It is certainly an impressive display of Ferengi ingenuity to rival even the ambitions of the Grand Nagus himself.

As the ship approaches the station in the center of this assortment of oddities, a large hologram ignites at the station's peak to reveal the image of an astute Ferengi. The architect of this most profitable venture. Now a young one, but soon to rise to greatness.

The captain recognizes him of old. A one time partner, but forever a rival as the case should be for every Ferengi. The image turns to reveal his eyes, alight with cunning and guile. It smiles with teeth as sharp as can be. The communications system rings with his soon-to-be iconic voice as he recites the Rules of Acquisition for all to hear.

But a single thought crosses this captain's mind as the image continues to turn and reveal that most notable of Ferengi aspects. Such a thing that had been claimed, but never realized until now.

With ship after ship and customer after customer passing through the system, the captain speaks aloud: "He DOES have the lobes for business!"

Description

The 2160s saw the beginning of the rise of an industrious young Ferengi named Zek. Barely in his second decade of life, Zek had already made a name for himself, first by purchasing an apprenticeship and earning both himself and his mentors a tidy profit, and later as an entrepreneur, pursuing various, modest business ventures. By his 23rd birthday, Zek had accumulated a diverse portfolio of profitable investments and properties, overcoming the obstacles thrown in his path by jealous competitors and cementing his position as a rising star in the Ferengi marketplace.

Zek, however, was far from content. Greed is good after all, and as the 62nd Rule of Acquisition makes clear, the richest rewards lie at the end of perilous paths. Zek’s latest venture would also be his greatest and by far his riskiest – a dealership specialising in the salvaging, refurbishment and sale of used and decommissioned starships. His fellow businessmen were incredulous. Used starships tended to bring in modest returns at most – surely there was no real profit to be found in junked, obsolete hulks – and Zek’s competitors quietly wrung their hands at the prospect of his inevitable downfall into failure and destitution.
