Well, you always need a darker shade of gray to keep the lighter shade of gray from turning darker...

In other words, the decades between the fall of the Soviet Union and the current few years has seen the West becoming much more... morally ambiguous (not helped by the War on Terror, which was a wonderful excuse for various governments to expand their power at the expense of their people, such as the PATRIOT Act, the NSA spyings and various other stuff)). Maybe the rise of these "new evil empire(s) (Russia, China, etc)" Can at least slow down the West's slide toward curtailing their people's freedoms... or makes both sides equally evil.

Lacking an ideological enemy, western free market capitalism has morphed into a pseudo-neo-feudalism/crony capitalism. Perhaps it's time for a new enemy to force capitalism to rein in their worst excesses.

We've always been morally ambiguous, governments just started to have a harder time hiding things with the internet.

The US government has been rather incompetent in regulating/using the internet. Putin, on the other-hand, knows how to play the media like a flute- he's former KGB so it's not far from what he probably used to do working for the USSR.

Honestly, neither side is justified here. We should keep our military strength up (because we have a ton of countries under our defense umbrella), but otherwise we shouldn't get too involved in affairs we don't actually understand.

I called this shiz right at the start. I mean, there's no way that people could genuinely believe that Ukraine was run by Nazis and that Stalin was a 'true friend of the people, a role that Putin is trying to take on'.

To be quite frank, its rather pathetic. I expected more from you Russia.

Look at it like this .. borders are borders (its only geographic ..it cant chang ethe people who live their ... you cant make a province into a country and think everyone who ived their will change their nationality sam wewith motenegro there are still a lot of serbs who claim to be serbs not giving up on their ancesters) and countries sometimes can just be made up by other countries to weaken the real Country.. Unraine ancesters proably come from Russia slavic nvm .. half of unraine is populated by russians who are figthing for their lives vs the catolics same happen in Croatia with the serbs.. Krajina nobady helped them and their province Krajina fell to the Croatians that will happen same in Uranie if Russia does not help the rest of the population of the Russians in Ukraine.

You know, a group of Sudeten Germans were killed by Czech border police in 1939. Those poor Sudeten Germans were helped out by a really nice Austrian called Hitler.

The point is that anyone can claim that they are helping an ethnic group in a neighbouring country. Truth is, that group doesn't need help; its an excuse to land grab from a neighbouring sovereign nation.

Put it this way; if there was a revolution in Romania, would it be acceptable for Hungary to invade? After all, there are a large amount of Hungarians and Szekely Hungarians living in Central and Western Romania.

Also, the Russians are not 'fighting for their lives' nor do they make up half of Ukraine's population. They make up about seventeen percent of the population according to a 2001 census.

Coming from someone who has never been a part of a certain endangered ethnic group.

How would you feel if a government of a country you live in started denying you your own culture, spiting on your religion, and burning your flags.

Russia is simply protecting it's borders from EU and NATO, and I think we all know that those two are not friendly neighborhood palls like they say they are.

But that hasn't happened until Russian troops marched into Crimea. If you can provide some evidence from relatively neutral sources, I'm willing to change my view.

Edit: I just searched various terms equating to 'anti-Russian, Ukraine'. The only stuff that came up is related to the events that the occupation of Crimea sparked off. Also, about the EU; f*ck it. I hate it. It needs gone and gone quick. Rebuild it properly from the ground up with nations joining based on the people's votes.

I tend to avoid Wikipedia because of everybody's lack of trust in it. And when it comes to the media, the best you can do is check more than one news outlet to see if they are generally in agreement.

I'm still against Russia occupying Crimea. For the same reasons I would be against India, Pakistan, Poland or Romania occupying London; just because people who share the ethnicity of your nation's majority live in an area in large numbers, does not give you the right to occupy that area. I would understand if the Ukrainians had willingly given up Crimea but they haven't.

Russia's actions are in direct violation of the Budapest Memorandum, which they signed. They are in the wrong. There is no way around it.

What Russia did was obviously a selfish act. They could've kept exploiting Ukraine by just maintaining good economic relations, but they prefered blunt force which obviously doesn't work. A happy cow produces more milk. At least the West have the decency to insidiously seduce other countries with immediate wealth and consumption while sucking their resources.

What happened in Crimea was a relatively peaceful political takeover, a "landgrab" or a "Motherland returns" if you wish.

It was all organised better there, very little people died, there was a strongly enforced discipline, SOP & and a general sense of justice. The Russians came in and the Ukrainians went back home, no questions asked. There could be worst and there a feeling in Ukraine the separation just went through, Crimea didn't ment all.

What is going in the Eastern regions, the Donetsk & Luhansk duo is totally different. Initially it was supposed to went like Crimea but without the strong internal military backing. Now the people there are becoming increasingly militant, militarised and even producing their own upgraded versions of the BTR-70 APC. Now it is more resembling old fashioned war communism sprinkled with some Chechnya-styled black ops. The former GRU Spetsnaz elements of the Vostok batalion unit are unfit for this.

The appearance of paid Internet sock puppets and trolls is nothing new. Remember, the US does the same albeit on a much specialised scale.

I think that's the joke about the internet accounts; Russia has very little idea of what its doing or how to do it.

What about the professional blackhat hackers from the Voronezh?

Surely the Russian military & intelligence is specialised in revolutionary warfare methods. Why they do have much experience in the field and on direct human-to-human tactics the concept of trolling isn't that foreign to them. Albeit outdated and standardised in approach.

I didn't mean hacking wise. I meant how incompetent they are with connecting to the citizens of the web.

We only bombed it when things got rather messy. You know, ethnic cleansing messy. And as part of a UN task force I should add.

It's just a propaganda war. Nothing new except for the methods for delivering the message.

You may have noticed an odd increase in the number of people who love Russia and think Kiev is ruled by Nazis who consume the flesh of Russians. Well, you weren't exactly wrong.
