Grim Dawn is developed by a small indie team of experienced developers, led by the lead gameplay designer of Titan Quest, using an enhanced version of the Titan Quest engine and tools. Please note that this game is still in development.

Key Features

  • Combine any of five distinct skill classes each with multiple skill trees in which to specialize. Advance your class mastery to unlock over 25 powerful skills and synergistic modifiers per class. Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist and Nightblade are currently playable with the Arcanist on the way.
  • Fast-paced tactical combat with enemy blood spatters, ragdoll physics and satisfying enemy death effects. Smash in doors and fight house to house, leaving a path of demolished furniture in your wake.
  • Collect hundreds of items in common, magical, rare, epic and legendary classes of loot. Both randomized rare affix items and custom crafted unique items can provide amazing bonuses and special item-granted skills to support numerous different class builds.
  • Dynamic Weather brings the world to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rain showers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
  • Gameplay systems designed to expand for 200 levels of character progression, equipment, and enemies to fight makes for ridiculous amounts of replay value.
  • Connect with old friends or make new allies in glorious multiplayer. Multiplayer encounters will put your teamwork to the ultimate challenge. (multiplayer is not yet available but is expected in early 2014)
  • Collect item recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of unprecedented badassness. (still in development but almost ready to roll out)
  • Camera rotation enhances the three-dimensionality of the world and gameplay while levels are still designed so that players are not forced to rotate the camera.
  • New quest and conversation system will allow players to interact with NPCs in more interesting ways and choose different paths to complete quests. (Some quests offer choices in Act1 but much more of this is coming in Act2)
  • An NPC faction system lets the player improve their relations with different NPC groups to earn rewards as their favor increases such as merchant discounts, new items, and additional quest lines. However, aiding one faction could turn a rival faction into your enemy. Choose which side you will support!
  • The ability to spend money to reclaim skill points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed decisions that could permanently nerf a character.

Development Roadmap

You can currently play about the first 1/3 of Grim Dawn and up to character level 25, with some additional higher level secret areas to be found beyond the main story content. While content is still in development, the core gameplay is already fairly robust and a lot of fun. There is quite a lot of replay value between trying different classes / builds and collecting items. We're still refining gameplay based on player feedback, adding requested features and working to deliver the remaining content and additional slated features. Most players report that the current build is fairly stable with mostly mild bugs and we're always working to fix bugs as they come up. Here is some of the stuff we plan to roll out in the coming months:

  • Act II content will be released in the next few months
  • More quests with choice and consequence in Act II
  • Continued optimization and bug fixing
  • Item crafting will roll out, probably before the end of the year
  • Additional difficulty modes and multiplayer should become available early to middle of 2014
  • More questing and NPC interaction involving factions
  • 5th player class, the Arcanist, should be ready early to middle of 2014
  • Additional big content releases in mid to late 2014

We expect the final game will provide about 20-40 hours for a first-time play-through on normal difficulty, depending on level of exploration / clearing. This is our first game as a studio and we intend for Grim Dawn to be a continuing franchise, not just a one-off game. So it is important that we put in the time and effort to create something we're proud of, that will help us to earn a loyal fanbase for the future. We hope you'll come be part of this experience and help us to forge a strong new addition to the ARPG genre.

Humble Bundle has kicked off their summer sale, running until September 6th. Some great deals are on, up to 90% discount on some titles, and so here's our picks for five games on sale and a mod for each to get more bang for your buck!

Game: Grim Dawn: £4.99 GBP/$6.24 USD

Mod: Dawn of Masteries

By civ_mamba

DoM Diablo2

Adds additional masteries from other mods. Cataclysm, Diablo 3, Grim Quest and NCFF masteries are included. ARPGs with an emphasis on player experimentation are all about trying different combinations of capabilities to see what you can rustle up, and so mods like this that add even more moving pieces enhance replayability for any metagaming player.

Game: Stardew Valley: £9.89 GBP/$13.49 USD

Mod: Walk to the Desert Redux

By Aeywoo

Have you ever wondered why the Tunnel is blocked by a boom gate? And how the hell does Pam drive through it when there is no visible access panel nearby? Well wonder no more! Because this mod is basically just to spite the design of one boom gate in a dark Tunnel. But there are a few reasons that everyone else would rather take the bus. The road just happens to be very long, and sometimes there are monsters roaming about. You'll either want to bring a sword with you, or just run, really fast.

Game: Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord: £35.99 GBP/$44.99 USD

Mod: Realm of Thrones

By carolinawarlord

Targaryen Soldier Armor (HOTD) by GulagEnabler

Game of Thrones total conversions are popular for any fantasy game, and whilst Warband had more than a couple, this mod was one of the first to bring Westeros to Bannerlord. Featuring Westeros and a large chunk of Essos, nineteen new kingdoms, eleven new cultures, and hundreds upon hundreds of new weapons and armours to chase alongside new quests, it's a great start for a scene still finding its footing.

Game: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: £6.99 GBP/$9.99 USD

Mod: The Witcher 3 REDUX

By 1ndig0

Meditation (no menu)

The Witcher 3 is a critically acclaimed game, with a deep story, fantastic visuals, and reasonably solid gameplay. That being said, the latter is the sticking point for many people, who feel its gameplay still doesn’t quite match up to the rest on offer. This mod aims to revise the gameplay loop, beginning as a small personal retooling, and expanding into a total revamp. With new inventory systems, the removal of the EXP levelling system in favour of a skill-based level schema, and even new attacks that can be unlocked through practise, the mod brings a fresh take forwards on The Witcher 3’s gameplay.

Game: Total War: Warhammer: £9.99 GBP/$14.99 USD

Mod: All Tabletop Lords

By VX Mods

Image 4

Put simply, this mod adds new Generals (Lords) to Total War: Warhammer, for each of the factions rosters, all of which are based on Warhammer Fantasy tabletop. That means every character in this mod is LORE-FRIENDLY, and designed/balanced based on tabletop stats/abilities, and the existing design precedents from vanilla lords in Total War: Warhammer. It's really the only mod of its kind, bringing actual functional NEW Generals to the game, all with custom artwork, highly customized and heavily researched skills and abilities based on the canon and lore.

There's our picks for five games from Humble Bundle's summer sale, which runs until September 6th. What are your thoughts, and are there any other moddable games in this sale you're going to pick up?

It’s been in development for over three years, it got double its asking amount in a Kickstarter project in 2012, and now it’s available to buy and play via Steam Early Access.
