Intro
Hey there! Welcome to this week's roundup of the YouTube, where we covered a new yet instant classic and a great total conversion gameplay mod. First, though - a brief word on a change in direction for the YouTube.
Whilst the ModDB shorts were an interesting experiment that resulted in some occasional hits and a nice period of subscriber growth, they've begun to tail off considerably and we also don't think they best show the content on the site. The playthroughs generally have a much better showing, and have been received a lot better overall. Right now we're cutting down to three videos a week then - retaining the IndieDB shorts (as we'd like some form of IndieDB presence on the channel), with playthroughs on Mondays and Fridays. In the long run we're looking into efficient ways to double down on playthroughs and give even more mods the screentime they deserve! On that, we have a question - would you like a playthrough-format video made for some of the mods already covered in the form of shorts or lists on the channel? Or would you prefer we only do new material? Let us know in the comments below!
Now - on with the roundup!
Tuesday - Playthrough - The Chronicles of Myrtana
Total Conversions have become rarer and rarer over time, with newer games not quite having the modding support necessary to facilitate it. So, modders go back to the classics. Gothic II is now part of that club, with the Chronicles Of Myrtana, a huge fantasy total conversion. Winning Mod of the Year 2021, its popularity cannot be overstated.
Deck-based racing might seem like an odd combination, but Deck RX runs - or rather, drives - with the concept, with a retro sci-fi theme that gives you ample opportunity to collect new cards, craft new strategies, and win intense games across many hand-crafted planets and environments. Still in development, it'll be great to see this unique indie reach the finishing line.
Portal, as a franchise, has seen a lot of different concepts thrown at the wall, and the sequel got even crazier. Some concepts, like portal gel, made it into the final release, whilst others did not. F-Stop: Project Capture recreates the ambitious pre-Portal 2 concept that includes camera mechanics and a whole new spread of puzzle-making potential.
That's all for this round-up. What do you think about the mods listed? Feel free to discuss below and check out the YouTube for more videos past, present, and future!
Thanks again. Love these roundups!
You're welcome! Do you have an opinion about doing the showcase vids for mods that previously were only featured in shorts or lists (i.e. repeating content a bit, but with a stronger focus on that particular mod)?
Yes ofcourse. Especially if the mod/indie game deserves more attention or if there are major developments.
The volume of mods and games produced today is so high that a currated news section (That's how I see your work) is a fantastic thing. Time is valuable!
EDIT:
Maybe the team (Scott? lol) could make a curated news section in the next website update.
We used to have a whole game media industry for that, but they've lost credibility with most gamers and developers.
A curated news section would be interesting! We do a lot of editorials these days and they're generally displayed the same as all other articles on-site. They get some pretty good viewership anyway so people seem to have caught on to what's generally a site editorial VS a user article, but it would be convenient if it's all in one place!
Heh ^-^
Yes, the roundups are cool to watch, a quick update on various mods
Thanks for the shout-out!
