It wouldn't be that much harder. I am gonna take my mod to HL2, because it will probably be pretty similar to HL.

it troubled me to add HL2 for example before release. I agree with you guys, at best you could plan out your gameplay, do minor visual and concept work but thats it. Considering such 'boring development' work is normally never tackled by modding teams that just want to make the mod, nothing more i reckon it is silly to begin making a mod for a game not released.

So yeah it was added due to the protests i recieved and yes they did total a few per day!

Although I said before that it stinks modding for a game not released yet let's give'm nevertheless a try. They can only become one more annoying mod or perhaps a blast ;=)

I'm keeping my mod where it is (UT1), because not everyone in the world has a super new computer that can run the new engines in the first place. My friend's computer still even struggles to run HL. I'm staying with the old engines!

Yeah, old games rulez. Specially when you don't care about graphics, which is the only big enhancement I can see in new games.

I though the UT2003 engine was supposed to be 'next generation' too :D.

But I wonder how many of these mods which are currently starting up for these as-yet-unreleased games will actually ever see the light of day?

i think its silly to specualate until the games actually release... who knows? hl2 and doom3 could both blow large amounts of chunks, and be next to impossible to mod well.... but you wouldnt know this until the mods were actually released

Actually, I think alomost every game now is going to be "mod-friendly", as they've seen that a mod community helps a lot to sell the games (I mean, earn money ;))

I'd keep my mod on older engines because that's the only ones I know how to work. Plus, as ShortCutMan has already said, not everybody can run the super-high-end stuff.

I agree entirely with what is said here: Mep.beyondunreal.com When I see some people with new mods I almost laugh out loud. Granted, some turn out very well, but (unfortunately) especially with HL alot of mods are doomed to failure.

Maybe this article can explain why we have so many mods being created all the time... and also, why they usually end in pizza ;)

I'd not change my mod position at all. Why you ask?
Because it envelopes more promise and trust in the mod. Retreating to a newer engine due to the "pretty graphics" pretty much screams "IDIOTIC PROGRAMMER!!!" or "LAZY!!" and lack promise and often looked as shameful.

Yeah, that's the point. I think the only big difference between old and new games are the graphics. "Nothing more, nothing less". Sure, the newer engines are easier to mod (usually, not a general rule), and it can help a lot to decide which engine you're going to use for your mod, but we've to keep in mind the the software developers should have done this modifications (to ease your life, you know) before... ah whathever, these new games are killing me... cuz they sucks (at least, they should be much more that they are).

Talking about never engines I heard here a lot of better graphics and stuff. But there's another problem. HL for example I can run without any trouble on any system I've got around me but some of those super new engines just suck when it comes to run them. UT2k3 for example crashed like hell, was unstable and so on. One reason I like mods for older games is because those games Run For Sure and I know they will run but never engines usually tend to introduce a hell more problems than their graphics are worth it ;=)

Actually, the main reason for the stupid requirements are the graphics. And... I must say the software developers are too lazy today. Have you ever played the first version (w/o patch, I mean) of UT2003? There's one model which has a bug (and freezes the game when you see it running around)... oh, the worst thing I've ever seen.

I think I was one of the firsties to finish UT2k3, as most people would get stuck with the freezes, and would have to wait for a patch to continue playing (I think that's what happened)... but I could find some solutions (hehehe).

Some maps of the SP ladder would add that bot with the "bugged model", so I had to type "Killall bots" to remove the bots from the game, and then "Addbots 1", and I'd play a 1-on-1 match to proceed. :D Smart, ya?

Also, some maps would lock up for another reasons (I think 2 BR maps would do that)... so I had to rename them (like, I duplicated a file from a map I could play, and renamed it, so I'd play on that map instead of the bugged one). Hehehe... Incredible, isn't it?

Don't forget the lamer ratio of a gaming community will be flocking to the pretty stuff. Maybe HL will be gold again next year.

You have here some good points Darkness. I myself haven't played ut2k3 long enough to hit those troubles 'cause it dropped of my hd very fast but those bugs are really annoying and should never ever be in a finished release. But try making some errors by manipulating some files in the game folders and you will soon end up with ASSERTION failures (a debugging thing) that should never be visible nor happen to end-users.
It's a shame that these things happen a lot with never games because it kills the joy and keeps people (like me) away from buying new stuff.
Let's just hope HL2 doesn't turn out like the first ut2k3. It has to perform very well to fit its anchestor.
