Today we bring you a small update to inform you on the development status of The Great War - 1918. For a long while now we have been working on implementing a satisfying trench system. Fortunately it is now done thanks to Jannev, a coder of the CoH modding community.

The trenches are built fence-style, like barbed wire and sandbag walls, and without limit to their length. Infantry can walk along them while receiving trench cover, and tanks can drive over them. This all contributes to a more dynamic and realistic gameplay.

The downside is that trenches take time to dig (ever tried digging a deep hole with a shovel?). Passive players may very well end up facing an impenetrable defensive net if they leave their opponents dig it though.

Rifles also received a visual upgrade with the attachment of bayonets. Those have been modelled and skinned by Cireva, and I'm sure we can all appreciate the addition.

Alas until we can find someone to make the animation, soldiers can't wield bayonets in melee. Instead we had to resort to equipping them with wonders of technological progress: spiked clubs.

The alpha phase of the mod has ended and it is now entering closed beta. Development will be limited to setting sounds, bug fixes and balancing as the mod is being tested. Some work has also started beyond first release and its two starting factions. We should be able to announce a release date shortly.

The team also thanks all those who voted for us on the MOTY award. Getting to the top 100 was a nice surprise.

that`s exactly what i am looking forward too ;)
i mean, isn`t that what the mod is all about? i want epic large scale trench warfare, and not a rush-rush/blitzkrieg game.

There is one thing I wish for in this mod (and regular CoH), and it's much more diverse "gameplay" as in maps with loads of manpower (like double amounts of income), maps with loads of that and less of that.

Because playing with a few squads keeping them alive IS fun. Huge bloody infantry assaults IS fun to. I want all options :))

How about that once bayonets are added infantry gains the ability to charge. They'll lose suppression and start sprinting but will be more vulnerable to fire.

Can someone explain how the trenches work, I mean are they automatically built underground/below surface or are they like sandbags in vCoh?

@Cireva Yeah, I did read the update. But my question is: when you build a trench, does it automatically ''dig'' a hole in the ground like seen in the pics? (I might have asked it wrong, english isn't my native language.)

Yes, the hole comes with the walls, as does the «dug earth» splat.

We reckon that technically it would be easy, as it requires just one 2-second "fire" animation (and we already have the skeleton for it). The rest of the animation tree wouldn't even be needed. The problem is finding someone to do the animation.

I have 2 questions: will the soldiers e able to Get
Out of the trench wherever they want (maybe Jim-out Button)
Or will they have to find an Exit?

And if u have 2 trench Lines and u want connection beteten
Can u just Build it?
Because if it would Be like sandbags there would Be
The trenchwall in beteten and they couldnt Pass...
Also, will u Be able to put fieldguns in those trenches
? For more cover i mean??

Awesome update!!

Guys I must ask a massive favour!

Can everyone here please try and show others that play this game this mod? we could really make this community huge if we spread the word of this mod.

I've shown 5 others who haven't even played Company of Heroes this mod and they are all very interested in this for they have never really liked RTS but are extremely interested in the idea of a WW1 game!

This mod is so unique that it specialises in WW1, I can't think of any game growing up of this genre.
