Hey all! It's Alex, and let me just start by saying:
SUMMER IS HERE!
Finally we are out of school and we have time to hang with friends and among other things, work on Tension. We actually have been working a lot lately and suffice to say the game looks quite different from the last post in the sense we have a HUD!
It ended up being more of a theme setting object than actual information display. This is because in our game we want to have a minimalistic feel to the HUD.
The HUD started simply with the helmet outline, to which we added an altimeter to the left side, and decided to use images instead of numeric values on the altimeter because.. Well quite frankly it's cute. So cute.
In the video I'll also be showing off one of our alpha maps, just a simple orange free roam city but fun none the less.
Expect another post soon as we are in full swing (lolz) and excited to show off what we complete. As always any suggestions on the HUD are welcome, we were thinking of adding a lens flare, thoughts?

Is looking cool!
Nice video and nice music!
looks like Bionic Commando ;P
waiting for a relase :>
LoL i like this spiderman style, its awesome.
That looks like a ton of fun.
Will you guys be incorporating head bobbing? by making the HUD move when the player does would look bad ***.
The HUD looks pretty awesome anyway.
everything always looks like something else to you nubs, doesn't it?
Cool **** though, I'm kinda worried about the movement though, it seems a bit floaty and slow :(
what the hell are you talking about? Because someone made a Spiderman reference? Uh, point of fact, I believe back in the oh, what was it late 60s? That Spiderman was created, he was the -only- person swinging like that. Hell even to this day I can't think of very many people/characters or the like, that 'swing' in ANY manner.
well, if you don't know a game people like to compare it to somethign they know, such as spiderman
I think a lens flare would be cool if it is not in the way too much.
Also, I agree with stoopdapoop; the movement looks like it needs to be tightened up a bit.
wow ! impressive work! good job guys... this look like real fun!
Yah looks great. Nice to see some unquie hl2 mods instead of the same shooters out there atm.
Great Work :D can't wait to see some level shots all textured etc.
Head boobing and many other cool effects would be possible if it was a 3D model instead of a screenoverlay.
We changed from screenoverlay to a model based bloodscreen for Goldeneye Source too, because there were issues with compatibility to for things like the refract shader or envmaps on DX8.
Also the ammount of textures needed for a smooth animation was much to high.
A real 3D HUD could add much more depth to the game.
BTW: i won't mention that the shape of the HUD reminds me on Metroid Prime. ;)
the idea of lense flare brings about an interesting relationship. Lense flare is activly avoided in film making, in fact film companies put thousands into removing it or purchase equipment to shade the camera from it. it's interesting that games want to put it in to add 'realism' but then lense flare is only caused by the lenses of a camera. including lense flare just highlights the fact the environment is not real but viewed through a camera. be it 1st or 3rd person. BUT because of the treatement of your HUD that enforces this helmet / visor business you could possibly pull it off.
regards
We also talked about this! A lens flare in most video games is sort of silly considering it never happens to our eyes, but we are still debating on it because we use a helmet overlay..
Very cool keep at it!
I can't honestly say I do not love that music, it's really great, nice work guys, keep it up!
Well, from my perspective that HUD isn't working. It works but you're missing fundamentals of structure and opacity, it's too loud on screen, the opacity needs lowered and the glow needs to be dropped at all cost. I guarantee if you removed the glow from the edges and stuck to a vector orientated layout with a decent non-eye distorting colour scheme it'll be a lot better.
Gameplay looks really smooth which I have to admit is a surprise, a pleasant one though.
yeah, progress!
i'dd say make the outline of the helmet opaque ala metroid prime

We tried this, but it is too restrictive, you really need to see in Tension.
Is it just me or I saw Ninja Rope from Worms games o_o
