We're feeling pretty good about ourselves today.

We want to say a HUGE "THANK YOU" to everyone who voted for us, to those who have stuck with us throughout the years, to our donators, contributors, streamers and our players. We value all of you greatly. What a ride it has been and what a way to end the year.

I also want to (again) personally thank the EZ2 team. Since release, the Boys™ have been hard at work putting together patches and updates for EZ2. This work has mostly been handled in my absence as I have been tied up with work commitments. A massive thank you to you guys!

We have a few things we would like to share with you, in light of this award.

Developer Commentary

This month we started working on implementing developer commentary for EZ2. This won't be your average Source game commentary. This was something we knew we wanted quite a while back in development. Blixibon became the champion of this cause. During production, he vividly explained his vision for commentary in EZ2 to us:

blix plans

He ran with that thought, and throughout development Blixbon spent time making improvements to Valve's existing commentary system. The new system sports features such as: developer specific nodes, text nodes, cut content nodes and image nodes. Audio nodes are still a thing and we'll be recording a lot of our commentary so it isn't all text. Here are some examples:

example1

example2

We're still figuring out how things are going to be presented and how personalized commentary is going to be. I don't have any timescales yet - but we're excited about it, we're working on it and it's really neat!

Hopefully through our commentary, we can shed light on what we got right, what went wrong and generally give players and modders a thorough run-down on how we built EZ2. Watch this space.

Production Goodies

To compliment that announcement, today we're cracking open a shared drive folder full of production screenshots and videos dating back from the very first day of development in 2018, all the way up to release.

There's a LOT of content here, completely context free for your viewing: CLICK!

EZ3 When?

I get asked this question on the daily. In the spirit of being transparent:

For the most part since release, a lot of us have become busier. The guys have their commitments. Mine changed just after release. I'm also working on something myself separate to Half-Life and Source. We've been taking a lot of time away from the creative EZ2 space.

However, sometime between October and December, I drafted several ideas for a continuation of EZ2. My personal interest in the idea of a continuation, comes from wanting to see more of Bad Cop and Wilson and I know that sentiment is shared by many players. One of these ideas is brilliant and we're very excited about it. We've played around a bit, but it remains to be seen if we can use what we have as a springboard into a new production. Right now, anything could happen - so I can neither confirm or deny a continuation. I'm sorry that I don't have a more definitive answer to that question for you.

These things. They take time. If it's going to happen, you'll know about it.

For now, please continue to enjoy EZ2. We've been loving the workshop content and look forward to seeing what else can be done. We're also very excited for Entropy : Zero Uprising, which should you totally check out if you haven't already.

Thanks so much!

well ******* deserved for actually delivering a fully fleshed out singleplayer experience on valve level of quality. To me, i would have chosen ashes afterglow as my personal top favorite, but since valve cucked us with abandoning the half life series, this has to be put on the pedestal. my only gripe is, it requires steam DRM. i want to see this DRM free one day. make a repack or something. i wanna archive it. stupid steam DRM......

what money, this is a free mod, for a game i already own and paid money for? i love this mod. its free. im german. i want to preserve their work. steam DRM is not archive friendly. one day it has to be on archive.org or abandonware.com because no one can archive the current steam DRM version. making this DRM free means, to be able to launch it without needing steam, the SDK or anything, like most gzdoom mods can be launched with just dropping a .wad file of the original into the mod folder and using gzdoom source port. theres no such option for source engine games. the original half life was as simple as that. but now you need to use steam and your steam library, account binding, all that crap, to play a mod. so it now requires extra modding steps to just get this mod away from steam DRM. but valve won´t let you.... why, you never asked why..... you think valve is some super nice PC friendly coproration, not in every sense, PC friendly sure, but not pro consumer. hats, gambling in counter strike, corporations are still always just corporations. why have they not put their steam exclusive games like half life on GOG already then?

gzdoom mods are doom and thus idsoftware property, but idsoftware allows free distribution of fancontent made with their assets. so does valve, the only difference is, valve chains you to steam willingly. there could be a steam store version of entropy zero 2 and underhell and all those Source SDK based mods AND a drmfree version like with HL1 mods. remember then the steampipe update broke "they hunger" and chained it to steam, so you had you archive the old version that worked with any CD HL1 version without needing steam at all? repacks of HL1 still accept drop in of mods like they hunger. HL2 mods don´t. you cant just drop underhell or entropy zero into the HL2EP2 folder and run it. its fine if you require a basegame to play a mod, makes sense, not every mod is standalone, but source engine based mods, always get chained to Steam and its method of DRM. people forget that so often. i cant imagine the amount of mods lost in 20 years because people couldnt or didnt archive. who spends all these years programming this and doesn´t want to preserve their work? developers dont need to backup their source code/mod/game for all of eternity or hope that valve as a corporation exists forever. nope. they just have to give people a DRM free version. many will preserve it FOR THEM. when "corporation X" shuts down servers, people make master servers. when gamespy died, people found a way. preservation is the duty of the people. and developers of mods should respect that, because big corpos dont.

Please anyone, before commenting, research Steam DRM. Even though i own HL2 physically and activated it on steam, if it were to shut down one day, it´s gone. and so is this amazing mod. only version capable of being played individually without reliance on valve servers would be the "crack group" cracked and standalone SDK modified version. which is the only version I could find where you just play the game, without steam being mandatory. just like the pirated version of spore and all the abandonware are the only ones able to be kept alive. GOG owners burn their libraries on discs when the shop goes down or CDPR dies one day. goldberg steam emulator is used to run drm free games, without relying steam to be started logged in. steam DRM is stupid. rm free games tied to a form of DRM many dont realize is DRM. Because.... steam DRM is not recognized next to denuvo etc. sometimes its enough to delete the steamapi.dll. but other times it doesn´t. but it takes more than just crack or emulate steamapi.dll files. a source engine mod needs specific modification to get working even without steam DRM which is another annoying part. whatever the IGGGames version did, it made entropy zero 2, standalone.

I think there's a video showing how to play it without a HL2 license here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr3srcobB_M

Congrats guys, you deserve every bit of praise you got for your creation - EZ2 instantly became not only a classic half-life mod but also an amazing shooter that can compete with the newest AAA games :D

And so we've reached the point of the cursed number.

Jokes aside, I'm really looking forward for the next part.

It would be cool to have something in between Portal 2's narrative where you have your trusty AI companion supporting you throughout the game and classic Half-Life gameplay (even though we already got a lot of it in EZ2), but with the only exception that you do not have to carry Wilson around physically anymore. And of course, there is always room for more character development of Bad Cop, from simply a generic villain in EZ1, to a more fleshed out character in EZ2 and finally to a possible catharsis in EZ3 (or a tragic ending where there will be no survivors).

1000% deserved. The Half Life Episode 3 we never had, finally came from the fans.

It is MOTY… could be even GOTY.

Take your time for EZ3. You already did more than enough. Of course everyone want to see where Bad Cop finally a « free man » Aidan and his buddy Wilson will wander into the unknown now,

But I know as well it’s really the « unknown » for you too as you have pushed the depths of the official lore as deep and as far as you can XD

Good luck, anyways. I will be there to play it day one even if it is in 5 or 10 years.

HL Echoes and EZ2 filled the gap VALVe left opened for too many years.
