Installer is back up. Sorry for the long wait.

The installer's about 350 MB, it unpacks to twice that amount. For those of you not in the know, this release will let you bomb through the introductory section and first level out of four planned levels. Check out this handy map for your visual reference pleasure:

Brochure Side B

Whether or not we'll actually be providing those other levels is a question to ask us some other time. Zombie Zoo's fate is still undecided beyond this release. The current release is very rough around the edges. Trust me, we're aware of this. That being said, learning these tools as we went along and starting out with a team of only four people (it ballooned to ten during the second semester), we're quite proud of the final product and hope you enjoy it for what it is.

If you're wondering what the deal with the preview image of this news post is, that strange red thing behind the text is Blobmonster. He was our quadruped stand-in we used in the game while we were still working on modeling and animating the animals. He came in red, yellow, and blue and he will be missed.

Also, I've uploaded the re-edited Introduction animation. It's very similar to what was up there before, just a few small changes and additions. Anyway, that's all. Go grab the mod and let us know what you think!

"It's a bizarre and dumb oversight on our part that you have that thing and can use it."

Well assuming you haven't done this already, here's a tip:
Get fresh eyes to test the mod when appropriate, especially before a release. In this case these are players that will immediatly rate you down on it. But even fresh eyes can miss that sort of stuff, only a larger scale "test" like a release is likely to find all the bugs you weren't aware of.

Anyway, not too interested in playing it myself in such an early state, especially without a gameplay video to tip me over *hint hint* but consider you guys have a decent rating from 8 people already tells me you're at least on the right track with a sort of "Release early, release often" type approach.

I wish you luck for the future of this project.

Indeed, you are always telling the truth. Give it a try and then post here what you really think, but i'm with you, I hate to play "rip-offs" of the complete game. Guys, I'm gonna wait more and when you fully release it, I will be glad to play.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. This was a student project. Most of us are going our separate ways after this release. We very well may make more Zombie Zoo but it's entirely likely it won't even be a Source mod in the future.

If your team does decide to not continue developing the mod is there any chance it could be given to the community so we can carry on making it?

I think it's full of potential and would love to get hold of the maps and 'pretty' them up for you.

Anyway, well done on making such an original mod!

I played it, and while it was fun, it definately could use some map editing. The NPC's were very cool, except that the bunnies could maybe hop at you a bit :) Overall, a lot of fun, yet with some level work it would be pure awesomeness.

It was very disappointing. While the audio was nice, the graphics were extremely ******(textures were filtered with Photoshop "cutout" effect. I know it was suppose to look cartoony, but it just looks lame. Take a look at TF2, the textures aren't blurred and formed by 2-3 colors.

Make chapter 2 less ****.

I finished this mod in about 5 min. I was very disappointed. Find a new mapper It is ALLOT of mapp glitched(shortcuts, purpel black textures, blocks in the AIR, Allot of souns playing at the same time there were u enter the first mission wtf), and fix the combat system. the zombies didenĀ“t hurt me once event on hard. And the tf2 textures :/

This is a fail mod

We'd appreciate some constructive criticism. Radu and meecrob can you be a bit more specific about the mapping problems. You mentioned purple textures, air blocks and shortcuts. We'd love to know where so we can resolve the issues. Thanks

DuckSauce May 13 2010 replied:

@Radu, the form it is given which is bad, also like kingmook said, it's not about right or wrong. Also detailing these problems would be alot more helpfull to the developers than just stating found problems but not where they occured.

The mod was quite fun, quirky and comical. My only suggestion would be to merge the levels into one map, the levels were so short that it kinda broke to flow to have to load every 3-5 mins. Not that the load times were bad, just could have easily been two large maps for the whole game.

Megabacon May 23 2010 says:

I just played through the chapter that has been released.
The gameplay is boring and uninspired. Punching about 15 rabbits 4 times is not fun, and neither is pushing and breaking blocks.
Visually, the game looks ok. However the cel shaded textures sometimes conflict with the more detailed ground and rocks.
The best part of the mod is the audio, which is passable at best.
