this is a port and massive poly-reduction and rebuild of the DICE Battlerfront X-Wing. Engines, lasers and wings have been rebuilt, texture is courtesy of DICE with UV editing.

Super cool texture. What weapons is the xwing going to have?

Wasn't the T-65 variant quite outdated by the time the Vong war rolled around? I'm pretty sure it was something like twenty years old and they were using X-Wings that were called X-(insert semi random number) types. Like the X1 and X2 and so forth.

Edit: I mean, it doesn't actually make any real ingame difference, but it's something that struck me. (Don't worry, I hit it back.)

T65 was still used throughout the New Republic due to the high volumes that were produced during the Civil War. The T65-A1 was a modified design that removed the R2 unit, but this was uncovered as an imperial sabotage plot to hide remote detonating devices inside the new fighters. The E-Wing was developed as the successor, but due to mechanical problems upon first unveiling the E-Wing during the World Devastator battles, but E-Wing was only adopted fully by the 5th fleet, while New Republic Allies still preferred the aging X-wing. During the Vong War, the XJ series was developed that provided greater speed and firepower, but these were only limited to elite squadrons.

OK. Most of the books are from "Elite squadron" perspectives so that explains why I didn't quite know.

If I remember correctly, in Legacy of the Force there was a variant known as the Stealth X. Known Pilots Include Luke Skywalker, Jiana Solo, and other various Jedi on a mission to destroy the Anakin Solo over kashyyyk(?)

there were probably a number of factors that limited the J series' deployment.

1. in the time when the J series was first produced, which was stated as being shortly before the Vong war, the galaxy was in a state of relative peace. there wasn't an urgent requirement to build as many ships as possible, so Incom probably wasn't operating at max capacity.

2. there were a lot of X-wings in service already, and as long as they weren't near the end of their operational service lives, there wouldn't be much of a need for new or replacements.

3. even if there were a need for replacements, most modern military services have enough spare parts to make additional units, both in terms of the spare parts on hand, in massive depots in allied territory, and in the case of the US Navy with some of the smaller parts, Underway Replenishment Ships.
there is even a facility where decommissioned aircraft are broken down, and their serviceable parts returned to inventory.

4. supply lines. in most cases, if an aircraft on board a carrier has to be taken out of service, the replacement is usually delivered to the carrier when it returns to the shipyard at the end of its cruise, or at a suitable facility the vessel is scheduled to visit. very rarely will an aircraft be flown out to meet the carrier during the cruise, unless of course its in wartime and there is an urgent need for the aircraft. its a bit safer when you only have a pilot in an aircraft for a few hours as opposed to what could easily be a day, and probably less expensive since you might not have to engage the services of an In-flight Refueling craft.

5. Wartime. there is a need for every available fighting craft, and to take what could easily be a fully capable X-wing with only a few dozen flight hours, remove it from the inventory, replacing it with a new J model is a little stupid. now to take that X-wing, replace it with a new J model, and put the old X-wing in a unit that might be understrength from combat losses, or to put it into a newly formed unit, then at least you aren't losing units unnecessarily.

in short, there were too many X-wings built to be quickly replaced. there wasn't a need to quickly replace them for a while, and when there was finally that need, there was a war going on.

now at some point, I am sure that there were enough J series X-wings to replace the older ones, but that probably occurred later.

Fantastic model.
I wish the game had some proper AA, though.

Looks amazing can't wait till this is released. Only wish there was a R5 variant for an accurate Wedge Antilles with Mynock/Gate.
