Actually no. They're not actually lasers. Most hand-held weapons in Mass Effect use miniaturized mass effect fields to propel tiny shards of metal at high speeds. The projectiles are formed from a solid block of metal which are chipped off as needed, this only needs replacing after about a couple thousand shots. This produces heat, a lot of it, which in turn requires complex cooling systems. In the original Mass Effect, weapons had a cool-down system. In Mass Effect 2 and 3, they have replaceable thermal clips.

I much prefer the Mass Effect 1 system, but this mod uses the Mass Effect 2 and 3 system.

They're not lasers, but they appear similar to Star Wars blaster bolts in Mass Effects 2 and 3. In Mass Effect, the bolts were longer, less blaster bolty. Again I prefer this, but the mod uses the Mass Effect 2 and 3 version(s) instead.

Right. "Laser" is just what I always think of when I see the ordnance in Mass Effect and because the ODF parameters are "LaserTexture", etc. But yes, "slugs" is correct.
