The Last Stand is an addon project for the Sins of a Solar Empire, aiming to provide additional and original content, depth and challenge to the game, including three new races, new gameplay elements and tactical gadgets such as mines, interdiction abilities, deployable starbases, new ship classes and more.
Fancy shredding spaceships to pieces with your powerful laser? Then this mini-mod is for you. Also in this update, a look at one of the elite units which will be doing the aforementioned shredding on behalf of the Xin, the Impaler drone.
This update will have two parts. The first highlight of the day is, of course, the Volumetric Damage and Explosion Effects mini mod, available as a separate download because, why hold off the fun of blowing stuff up until the main mod is finished, right?
The premise behind the mod is simple - it adds voluminous effects to all your in-game explosions, critical hits and persistent damage effects. Now, in addition to seeing spaceships actually burst apart in a hundred pieces careening off into space (at very little or no performance impact I might add), you can see them being set on fire, vent atmosphere, spray ship bits into space and more. This is especially fun when a ship is subjected to massed fire. Ever saw one of those footage reels where a tank is hit by an A-10 minigun? This is something like it.
Anyway, why talk about it, see it for yourself. For a preview of the mini-mod and also of the kind of visual experience the Last Stand combat will bring, check out this video:
Stand-alone variant v0.81 - this is the standalone version, to be used with an unmodified game Merge-friendly variant v0.81 -to be used with existing mods, for eventual compatibility issues and how to fix them, see readme.txt
Do note that the mini-mod *does not* contain Bailknight's Improved Particle effects seen in the preview. However, the merge-friendly variant is fully compatible with this mod.
For those who don't want the hassle of merging them manually, here is ver 1.3 of Bailknight's mod with added volumetric effects. Enjoy!
The second item for this update is the Impaler Drone, a special elite unit which will be available to players after much grueling research has been done. This little nasty will, however, almost certainly tip the scales in the Xin favor endgame, because it is almost twice as powerful as a regular assault drone. Hosts of these will be hard to repel indeed. Spamming static fortifications is recommended. ;)
Since 2002 we have explored, played and enjoyed mods of all shapes and sizes just like The Last Stand. We love games like Sins of a Solar Empire that have opened themselves up to modding. Because of communities like Workshop, Nexus, Curse, RTSL, GameBanana and Mod DB, more games support modding today than ever before.
Let's celebrate modding
As mods play a bigger role in the future of gaming, we believe it is important to recognize the effort the teams behind the work put in, giving us countless hours of enjoyment while asking nothing in return. We have the power to change our games and that needs to be celebrated to ensure it remains a big part of PC gaming's future.
It all started
In 2015, when the paid modding dispute left many gamers and modders worried about the direction the industry is headed. Things have since settled down, but we believe it is important to continue this small tradition to show we are not alone in our love for mods, and the open platforms that embrace them.
Mod Appreciation Week
Nothing is more motivating than knowing something you've built is being enjoyed by others. So this week if there is a mod you love on Mod DB (or anywhere else), make the effort to shout out to them, mention and link their mod in a tweet, blog, forum or facebook post with the hashtag #modlove2016 (or click the icons above for a pre-built post).
