A warp-in cap ship?

Pity Riker didn't take command of the Melbourne. His beard could have won the battle and saved thousands of lives.

Before I started using my webcam when streaming STA3, I used a .jpg of Riker and his crazy 'the federation is gone, the borg are everywhere!' beard over the viewer in the center of the toolbar.

I just couldn't help myself, it was too funny having that image when you're playing as the Borg.

I second Orions' question: Does it warp in as a cap-ship?

Furthermore, out of sheer curiosity: What do you think are the both smaller upper nacelles for? Are they some kind of auxiliary engines to the main ones?

I know that canon on this one is altogether contestable, but I wonder what the thought when adding the surplus-engines, which where later replaced by the torpedo-structure.

The Nebula class was a modular design. The entire upper pod could be switched around depending on the ship's mission. Most were equipped with the standard triangular sensor/weapon pod. Others, like the Phoenix, were equipped with the AWACs-like sensor dome.

The Melbourne, according to established canon, was equipped with a secondary set of warp nacelles, though the purpose of the design was never elaborated on. Perhaps to increase the ship's speed? Or maybe to increase it's warp range by easing the strain on the main engines?

Or perhaps experimenting with a new warp geometry. I always assumed it was a prototype.

Will you need spare crew for this to have a chance to spawn in when calling fleet support?

No, it will act as a cruiser.

A very tough cruiser. The Melbourne is the heavy hitter of the warp-in fleet.

It is. For internal purposes, it is classified as a battlecruiser, just like the Nebula and Phoenix.

In terms of firepower, at least, it's very similar. To my mind the only thing keeping it from taking on the mantle of a capital ship is its lack of special abilities.

Then you're probably not going to be happy with the new Borg Rubiks Cube...

Problem solving is futile.

With the exception of the New Orleans-class, none of these ships are constructable from a shipyard. Instead, a randomized fleet of them (appr. 6-12 vessels, frigates being more common than cruisers) can be called in with the "Third Fleet Support" ability on the Sol-type Defense Station. A typical fleet you'd see warp in will consist of a few Freedoms, 1-2 Springfields, Cheyennes, and Challengers each, and either a Niagara or Melbourne (two if you're really lucky).

The Curry-class will remain as the Federation's light strike carrier.
