Sakena is a 1st person, explorative, non combat game bult in UDK. Set in a jungle environment through the vision of a young South American tribesman, the environment will consist of jungle and Mayan architecture intertwined with the surreal nature of the vision. Similar in vein to experimental first person mods 'Dear Esther' and 'Call of the Fireflies'. This is a small, solo project meant as a visual presentation more than anything. I will continue to add to game after the stated release, including any new things I learn, in any free time I have.

Progress Summary

News

For those of you who are still following this game, I just want to explain why the updates have been nonexistent for the past few months. My priority at the point of development was to hand in the work for my final major, therefore getting updates on moddb wasn’t a priority, including all the stress and worry of presenting it in a summer show, I didn’t get much opportunity to post any updates on the page. However progress has been good and I am nearly ready to release a version on the site. I am at a stage now where I am fixing a load of bugs till I am happy enough with what I have completed to release it on moddb in its alpha stage.

I still has some ways to go till I have something I am completely happy with and I will detail a list of features and other tasks I be implementing over this year. This game being packaged so that it will require no other game or program to play, so excuse the fact that the page says it is a mod. I have posted a load of new media including some screenshots, play through video and sample audio so you can take a gander at the game features before playing. I will hopefully be releasing the first version fairly soon. Apologies for the late release. Looking forward to any feedback.

Below is a list of the main features I want to implement over the coming months:

  • Interactive NPC Villagers
  • Replacement of all UDK assets with custom assets
  • Repair all bugs
  • Improving graphical efficiency
  • Improved Lighting
  • Replacing all UDK Textures with custom textures
  • More things to discover in the forest
  • Improved puzzles
  • Scale form load screens and control HUD
  • Interactive Objects
  • Improved character movement and general flow

You should make the visuals really psychedelic in parts, like in a visionary sequence. Mayan architecture was largely inspired by the hallucinatory landscapes the priests envisioned when they tripped on enormous quantities of shrooms

Thats where the name of this game came from. Its the name of a hallucinagenic drug the sanema people use during ceremonies. Having some psychadelic post process effects and other wierd visuals is something I am planning to include once I get the features listed into the game. Will probably have the game start with a ceremony involving taking the sakena drug which will then start the vision.

Its Taken me some time to figure that out myself, but the game will be packaged so that it will require no seperate games or progrmas to run. In other words its a game.

Is Sakena a game or a mod ? Do we need UT3 oder just UDK to play this ?
If Sakena is a game, add it as a game and not as a mod ;-)
